Job Oportunities at City University

[Apologies for cross postings]

City University London has 3 vacancies in the Department of Information
Science: candidates with an interest in information retrieval are
particularly encouraged to apply. There are three vacancies:

  - Professorial level (Full Time)
  - Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level (Full Time)
  - Lecturer (Part Time: 0.5)

The focus of research in IR is in the Centre for Interactive Systems
Research (CISR). The Centre is world renowned for its research and
expertise in the area of information retrieval (IR). It has built up its
profile since its inception 20 years ago, and has been particularly
successful in the TREC series of conferences using the Okapi system. The
CISR was formed with the aim of bringing together a group working on
various aspects of information retrieval. Most of the work in the Centre
is on theoretical approaches (particularly the probabilistic model) and on
user-interface aspects. The Centre has had funding from Microsoft
(application of corpus linguistics techniques, an XML indexer for Okapi)
and the EU. The EU project, Tools for Innovative Publishing in Science,
involved the creation of a web-based interface to an Okapi database of
papers in high-energy physics, and research into the application of
collaborative filtering to improve the performance of the probabilistic IR
model. More recently the Centre was involved in the Reliable Information
Access Workshop organised by the Mitre Corporation, which has attracted
interest in the IR world.

More details of the posts can be found in the following:

FW: NB NB Invitation to the Specialist Groups' Assembly, 13 October 2004

I haven't seen anything from the committee and don't know whether it is as
open as it was when I was on it, but members of the list might want to know
the following is happening and if there are any issues which they think need
to be raised, this is the time.

There has been a big change in membership of the bcs and how to become
active.. There are also thousands of new members

Members will have had notice of the annual general meeting

Members of the irsg who are not members of the BCS, if you have been
involved and active for five years, may be fast tracked into professional
membership by nomination by a CITP....

Of which I am one...

So if there is anyone on this list, who I know, for I have heard you speak
and I have discussed issues with you, some time over the last five years,
and you want to be nominated, email me and we can take it from there.

Needless to say, if I don't know you, you need to try one of the CITP on the
committee.... Who I am sure will identify themeselves :)
