Doctoral abstracts

Dear all

Sigir Forum (http://www.acm.org/sigir/forum/) is the tri-annual
publication of the ACM Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval
and is aimed at dissemination of best practice in Information Retrieval
and related areas.

One of the Forum's regular features are abstracts of recently published
PhD dissertations. PhD abstracts are invaluable in informing the IR
community on recent research and promoting new researchers.

If you have recently completed your doctoral studies, please consider
submitting an abstract to the Forum. Typically this would be one to two
pages in length, describing the main outcomes and contributions of your
research. Recent examples of dissertation abstracts can be found at the
Forum homepage.

The Adaptive Information Access research group at University College Dublin
is recruiting a Post-Doctoral Researcher, to start in March 2004.

As part of a research team comprising about 10 researchers, you will plan
and execute cutting-edge research activities related to next-generation
intelligent information services. The particular research focus will be
tailored to your interests and expertise, but will involve the use of
machine learning techniques to solving problems related to information
access/retrieval and text/knowledge management.

You'll have recently completed your Ph.D. in Computer Science, with research
expertise in one (and ideally several) of the following: machine learning,
information extraction, natural language processing, and information
retrieval. In addition to relevant research expertise, the ideal candidate
will have excellent writing, software development and self-management
skills.

Our research is funded by large long-term research grants from Science
Foundation Ireland and the US Office of Naval Research.

JOHN CAMPBELL TRUST 2004 AWARDS (first call)
Dissertation and Conference/Travel bursaries 

For their first call of 2004, the Trustees are offering Awards
in the following category:

* Conference/Travel Bursaries:  This Award is intended to help 
a member of the information profession to attend a conference of 
his/her choice, and/or to undertake a programme of visits.  The
Award is open to a resident of the UK or Eire for travel outside
the British Isles. 

* Dissertation Bursaries:  This Award is intended to help a 
student of information/library studies in the UK or Eire, who has
to prepare a project or dissertation as part of his/her course of 
study, to pursue a topic which would necessarily require a 
programme of visits for the collection of information or data. 

The maximum value for an individual award is 1000 pounds.  The 
Trustees may make awards to a maximum total of 4000 pounds.

The closing date for these competitive Awards is 30 January 2004. 
Full details of the awards and an application form may be obtained 
from the CILIP website or from the Chair of Trustees (contact details 
below).
