InfoD-Cafe: digital gathering

Hello all,

I need a bit of advice. Every year the company I work
for does a number of 'design validations'. This is
where we take a version of our software and show it to
a small group of people ... the idea is to gather
opinions about new features and to, more or less, test
the design of these features – we're gathering
qualitative data. During this design validation, the
people perform certain tasks from a workbook. After
each section, there is a bit of debreifing/opinion
gathering.

Currently, we go through the laborious task of
flipping through each book and transcribing responses
to a spread sheet for further analysis – this is a
painful task considering each session contains 10-15
people and three-quarters of the sessions need to be
translated from other languages.

So, Language issues aside, is there a way to digitize
this process? The short answer is yes. However, I
would like a bit more than a word style form that I
have to collect from each machine. For now, I imagine
people working from a workbook; completing tasks and
moving to an onscreen survey-style program such as
Survey Monkey. This solution is good; but, I must rely
on an internet connection and I cannot supply visuals
on screen.

Re: InfoD-Cafe: digital gathering

Hi Nick,

I would be inclined to take one step back and ask some fairly
searching questions about the validity of the method you are using:
are you measuring what you think you are measuring, and are your
findings predictive of any real world behaviour?

On the question of data entry of test data, we have been using direct
entry into excel spreadsheets for some time in our diagnostic
testing, and taken the process through quite a few refinements. Doing
it directly saves us about a day in each round of testing which would
have otherwise been taken up in transcribing data.

BTW, we are working on a book on Diagnostic Testing in Information
Design, due for publication in January. Those of you interested in
this will be able to make advance discounted purchases soon at our
web site. We will announce the opportunity through our monthly update
subscription at:
http://www.communication.org.au/html/info/update_mail_list.html

best wishes
David

The Free Font Movement has been gathering momentum since January, and
recently Ellen Lupton made presented the keynote [0] to ATypI 2006
Lisbon!

http://www.designwritingresearch.org/free_fonts.html

The Open Font Library at http://www.openfontlibrary.org has recently
started growing to become the center of the Free Font world - perhaps
you'll be interested in joining the mailing list? :-)

[0]: It was planned as the keynote, but her flight was delayed so it
wasn't in the end :-/

InfoD-Cafe: Topology and the Tube from Edward James 4.11.2006

*****************************
Dear Folks

As already stated clearly, the tube map is not a map.

Mathematicians study this type of abstraction in Topology. They remove all
ideas of length and direction from a situation and look at what is left,
which is basically the connection between things.

So to them a cup with a handle is the same shape as a Bagel or doughnut with
a hole, ie it has a hole in it, and if you made one of them in plastacine,
you could remodel it into the other without making or filling in any holes.

The tube map is such a topological abstraction. If you constructed it out of
rubber, you could pull it around to obtain exactly the real layout on the
ground. All that matters is that on each tube line, the connections with the
others lines are in the right order.

Nothing else.

The rest is tasteful simplification of shape, which you all know only too
much about!

Edward

Re: InfoD-Cafe: Research Studies on Form Design

Hello
The following bibliography supported a paper I gave at the ISTC 2006 conference on form design. I hope
you'll find it useful.

The work of Patricia Wright (Cardiff Uni, Medical Research Council) is also well worth looking at. Early
issues of the Information Design Journal also contain research on forms.

Florence
