This also a problem for the Tools menu.. many Tools menu items are
globally useful, such as always having a xterm/cmd tools menu item for
any sort of project, and always being able to open Total Commander from
within any project, etc.

"Freepascal.Ru": wish - widget's "tag" property capable of reference storage

That's not integer but pointer.

( to make smth like run-time widget bindings )

Very funny article, its' pitty You don't speak russian :)

Shortly, the author stresses that the GUI offers a full set of components
for serious work but had to put the MSE* off because of non-customizable
color of syntax highlighting & etc minor text non-autotyping stuff.
So, the author advices to put the GUI to a far-far-away :)
Also, apprizes the Pixel image editor & sets it as an example of design -
that one which is extremely buggy & crash-prone.
Further, notes the Lazarus to be Delphi-compatible but "not fully" (
not -fully pregnant ? )
There're also some lyric & artistic sentences - funny too :)

Just imagine how much the USSR people may be "serious" !

There once was a discussion on FPC mailing list to change TComponent.Tag to
ptrint, Michael van Canneyt rejected...

In order to customize the highlighting edit the *.sdef files.
