SUN TRUNKING SW WITH VERITAS VOLUME REPLICATOR

Hello All;

Do you know any issue using VVR with sun trunking software?

Do you suggest?

Best regards;

vxdisk init a single disk slice ?

Hello all!

I know it was possible to add a disk slice (partition) into veritas diskgroup.

It could be done with vxdisk init command  like      vxdisk –f init cot1d0s0 type=simple

Is it still possible in 5.1SP1 ?

It seems to me not…

vxdisk –f init c1t5d0s0 type=simple

Gives error:  Device has a UFS FS on it

When trying with

vxdisk –r init c1t5d0s0 type=simple

Gives  error :  Device is in use as a FS_wholedisk

Regards, Pavel Tsvetkov

Re: vxdisk init a single disk slice ?

Hello Pavel,

AFAIK that was only possible on VxVM up to 3.x , it’s a shame it doesn’t work anymore that way. I’ve used it on 3.x, but fails on 4.x and 5.x

Re: vxdisk init a single disk slice ?

I'm curious as to the purpose of putting a slice in a disk group. Why do it? I know it was a work-around for rootdg requirements. But that's long gone.

*production* purpose?  Don't know.

But I used it all the time for testing multi-cylinder setups on systems
that didn't really have a lot of physical disks.

You could create lots of "disks" and show raid setups and failures, even
if you only have one or two disks on the test box.

vxconfigrestore

Hello All;

The following is in SF Troubleshooting guide.

As far as I understood, even VxVM objects (volumes, plex, subdisks, etc.) are recreated?

Soi what about the data on them? We need to restore?

Regards,

If any of the disk headers are reinstalled, a saved copy of the disks’ attributes

is used to recreate their private and public regions. These disks are also

assigned new disk IDs. The VxVM objects within the disk group are then

recreated using the backup configuration records for the disk group. This

process also has the effect of creating new configuration copies in the disk

group.

Re: vxconfigrestore

vxconfigrestore does, as you state, restore the disk group configuration onto the disks private region. The content of the restoration should match the most recently saved disk group configuration. The save is done automatically when any VM object (v, pl, sd, etc., in the vxprint output) is modified.

You might need to do recovery at the volume level in order to mount the file system. The file system may need checking.

No restoration of data is necessary.

However (here it comes, the famous "it depends"), it depends on what you are trying to do. If the reason you need to use vxconfigrestore is that you are trying to recover public region content, then data restore might be necessary. If it is a problem you suspect has been caused by VM a data restore wouldn't be necessary.
