How to disable a controller permanently ?

I am using VxVM 5.0 MP3 on Solaris 10 SPARC.

I use this command to disable a controller seeing by DMP, since i want
the multi-path to be managed by HDLM.

vxdmpadm [-c|-f] disable ctlr=ctlr_name

After executing this command, the controller is disabled, but whenever i
reboot the server, the controller is enabled automatically.

How to disable a controller from a DMP permanently ?

Re: How to disable a controller permanently ?

Vxdiskadm - suppress a device from view - BTW - this does do the
controllers. Should create an entry in /etc/vx/vxdmp.exclude.
Note - this does NOT suppress the startup scan by device discovery layer
BUT it will suppress by the time the system boots and users can log in.

Can I ask why you want to suppress - depending on the driver load
sequence - and this is seen with IBM Vpath ( sdd devices ) - but with
latest ASL/APM this should resolve correctly - VxVM does know about
other multipathing software.

Replacing a site in a remote mirror configuration

Hi,

I have a a server with volumes configured with remote mirror.
I need to replace an old site (old storage enclosure) with a new site (new
sotrage enclosure).
I thought about the following procedure:

The old site is called "oldsite" and the new site is called "newsite".

1.       Initializing the new storage disks
2.       Set a new site tag on these disks ("newsite").
3.       Join the new disks to the diskgroup
4.       Set the siteconsistent tag to off on all the volumes in the
diskgroup
5.       Use vxevac to evacute the oldsite disks, disk by disk
6.       Add the new site ("newsite") to the diskgroup: vxdg -g <diskgroup>
addsite newsite
7.       Remove the old site ("oldsite") from the diskgroup: vxdg -g
<diskgroup> rmsite oldsite
8.       Set the siteconsistent tag to on on all the volumes in the
diskgroup

Will my way work, and/or is there a better way to achieve what I want?
Are there any caveats I should be aware of?

Thanks,

Re: Resolution: CVM nodeid error

Hello all!

The case is over. Just a few words about the way I could solve the problem

1. The original node names & nodeid-s were restored as they were from the very beginning (mkdb01 nodeid 0, mkdb02 nodeid 1).

But vxfen module could no be configured. Instead it produced

VXFEN vxfenconfig NOTICE Driver will use SCSI-3 compliant disks.
Thu May  6 11:56:53 MSD 2010 cluster fencing. will retry. sleeping for 21
Thu May  6 11:57:14 MSD 2010 calling regular vxfenconfig
Thu May  6 11:57:19 MSD 2010 return value from above operation is 10
Thu May  6 11:57:19 MSD 2010 output was VXFEN vxfenconfig ERROR V-11-2-1016 There exists the potential for a preexisting split-brain
The coordinator disks list no nodes which,
are in the current membership.  However, they,
also list nodes which are not in the,
current membership.

I/O Fencing Disabled!

The first thing to be done is to clean the keys. I tried to do it with vxfenclearpre
  and

"vxfenadm -r all -f /etc/vxfendg"  showed no keys on disks

but vxfenconfig -c could not configure vxfen driver with same error :

The coordinator disks list no nodes which,
are in the current membership.  However, they,
also list nodes which are not in the,
current membership.

At last it came to me to perform vxfentsthdw on disks  (EMC Clariion) . And only after that all the keys were cleaned out of disks
and fence drivers were configured on both nodes .... And CVM started!

So I can make two conclusions about SF 5.1 P1 for Oracle RAC on RedHat Linux :

1. Changig nodeids can lead to a unability to configure CVM cluster.
2. vxfenclearpre cannot sometimes  remove the old reservation keys. vxfenttsthdw can do it for sure.

Kind regards! Pavel

Hi :)

Isn't that more "complicated" than using vxevac?

Linux VxVM Setup

Greetings all, first time poster here, so please be gentle.

I’m trying to run a POC for NetBackup Linux Flashbackup, but to do that I need a VxVM volume and VxFS partition.  I’ve got a 6TB lun presented to a test RedHat 2.6 server as /dev/sdb.  When I run vxdiskadm, option 1 to initialize the disk I get the following error.

This disk device does not appear to be valid.  The disk may not have

a valid or usuable partition table, the special device file for the

disk may be missing or invalid, or the device may be turned-off or

detached from the system.  This disk will be ignored.

  Output format: [Device_Name,Disk_Access_Name]

  [sdb,sdb]

vxdisk list gives me the following output.

DEVICE       TYPE            DISK         GROUP        STATUS

sda          auto:none       -            -            online invalid

sdb          auto            -            -            error

sdc          auto            -            -            error

I also tried running through the VxVM Admin guide and got the following:

vxdisk init sdb

VxVM vxdisk ERROR V-5-1-0 read of lvm header blocks for /dev/vx/rdmp/sdb failed

VxVM vxdisk ERROR V-5-1-5433 Device sdb: init failed:

        Disk Ioctl failed

My Symantec rep gave me some trial keys and free software, but I’m on my own for configuration. Can someone here throw me a bone?  I’ve got to be doing something wrong.

Thanks!

Re: Linux VxVM Setup

Jonathan,

Use fdisk to clear up the "error" state then initialize the disks.

SF 5.1 on RedHat KVM Hypervisor

Hello all!

I've been told by Symantec people that RedHat KVM Hypervisor and guest os are supported with SF 5.1.

But I cannot find anything about KVM on Symantec site.

Please, make your comments!

Regards, Pavel

Re: Linux VxVM Setup

Thanks for the help. Your post and another emailed to me privately led me to find an issue with the multipath driver. I didn’t notice this before, but there should not be an /dev/sdc. This was an alternate path to the same lun.

I’ve got my volume configured, 1.5 TB of data restored and flashbackups are running.  However, the speed isn’t what I had hoped. The backup runs for about an hour at <1MB/sec, backing up what looks like metadata. After that, the speed ups to ~25MB/sec. If I backup the data directly off the lun with a standard policy I get a steady 30MB/sec.

Are there any configuration settings or logs I can look through? Are there buffer settings I can toy with? There does not seem to be much in /etc/vx/log. We’ve had quite a bit of success in similar flashbackup scenarios with Windows file servers, and we’re hoping to push past 30MB/sec on Linux too.

Thanks,

-Jonathan

Jonathan,

Use fdisk to clear up the "error" state then initialize the disks.

Thanks!

-Jonathan
