[EE]: Test lead panel mount holder with fuse...? HP 3478A meter

Hi all,

I'm looking for a spare part... not sure what it is called, which is
making it hard.

It is a fuseholder designed to have probes plugged into it, and is
removable from the gear. The fuse is for protection for measuring current.

I have three of these HP 3478A meters (all from ebay) and one of them
does not have this fuseholder, and this was not specified by the seller
nor visible in the picture they provided. Unfortunately I should have
been on top of it when bought (a year and a half ago) but I put it aside
instead.

Now I'd like to find this missing part and get it running properly. It
works fine with a fuse holder from one of the other 3478As I've got.

In this picture, it is the lower right connector, "3A/250V fuse". It is
spring-loaded, in that you can turn it with a large screwdriver and it
pops out with the fuse.

Anybody know where I could get one, or even the standard industry name
for such a connector? I figure they are relatively common, but I
haven't been able to figure it out.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
J

I had a strong urge to get one, but unfortunately I'd have no use for such a
monster. Though I'm sure even the small percentage of UV which gets out of
could still give me a decent tan :o)

Assuming i'm reading it correctly. The service manual (
http://manoman.sqhill.com/pdf/hp-3478a.pdf page 5-7 pdf page 67)
mentions a JACK ASSY-FUSED and says it is made by HP with part number
5061-1163 with designation FC-101 and figure 5-1 (pdf page 69) marks the

We lost one of the rear fuse-holder of the Agilent benchtop DMM,
the only way to get it is to bug the Agilent sales guy and finally
got one from them. We bought a lot of their equipment
(8000/9000 scopes, LA, spectrum analyzers, DC power supplies,
etc).

Re: [EE]: Test lead panel mount holder with fuse...? HP 3478A meter

Hi - thanks, that is exactly what it is.

I guess a hack is in order. I suppose this is the downside of getting
late-80s mfgr gear. I'm sure it will be unavailable or at least not
worth the expense and hassle of finding one of them from god knows where.

Cheers,
J

Yup.

But... on the other hand, you have one of the finest DMMs you can get.

Based on a recommendation from Jim Williams, I bought an HP3455 DMM.
Amazing specs. What a deal at $95 or so... oh, the golden age of ebay.

Re: [EE]: Test lead panel mount holder with fuse...? HP 3478A meter

Hi - yes it is indeed a bit of a marvelous phase, where topnotch, $2000
in 1988 stuff can be had for a dime or a nickel on the dollar, and
largely works as well now as it did then. New gear in the kilobucks
realm, while significantly better, is off in a land of precision and
performance I doubt I'll ever need. Scopes may be an exception, but a
$1K tek TDS 220 (from ebay) has served me well for 7 years and counting.

It could hardly be cheaper than right now to get a lab of good equip for
most any type of design work. It just doesn't cost that much for what
will serve 99% of designs. Of course, if you do RF design, you're off
in a different world...

Cheers

Have you tried finding a parts unit on eBay? Someone who sells a lot
of them may even have a parts unit lying there and be willing to sell
you the fuseholder out of it for a fraction of the total cost (and
shipping).

Re: [EE]: Test lead panel mount holder with fuse...? HP 3478A meter

I've been stocking up on test equipment lately and I have been able to
get quite a bit of good RF stuff fairly cheaply. I've bought several
1GHz signal generators for $300 or so and a very clean, fully working,
late 1980s spectrum analyzer (Tek 492BP, kHz to 21GHz) with 30-day
guarantee for $2700. I also bought a mid-1990s Tek DSO (TDS320 I
think), about 2 years ago, which was in immaculate condition, only
power cycled something like 20 times according to the internal log,
with original probes and manuals, and with communications module
built-in, for $350. I ended up selling it again because I had bought
two scopes with the intent of keeping the better one and selling the
other once I had evaluated them.

I've also saved my company a good deal of money by buying test
equipment on eBay.

There are definitely still good deals to be had on eBay.
