Didn't I hear a story about Sony getting busted for buying knock off PS3's
and selling them as real Sony to make up their own production shortfalls?
Don't let that start a rumor, I may be dis-remembering it or combining
different stories in my mind, but I seem to remember something about that.

Re: [EE] 115V 50Hz and hot transformer

I've been in contact with the transformer manufacturer and so far they sound very
helpful.

They say I'm using it correctly, ie. it's appropriate to wire the two primaries in
parallel. They discussed core losses and copper losses, and did a quick calculation
on temperature rise that agrees with the temperatures I am observing. They point
out that this temperature is well within the specifications (insulation rating of 155
deg C) BUT they say they would like to see it lower than this (so would I !!!). Further
to this they will take a transformer from their warehouse and do some testing at
50Hz to confirm, and look at what changes if any can be made to improve
performance under these conditions.

Thanks for all the responses, I'll report back when I know some more!

Someone else thinks so

Could just be a repeated typo though

Two other little-known facts - in France, maglev trains are stuck
firmly to the rails, and Pere Noel comes from the South Pole on
a sled pulled by Rudolph The Red-Nosed Penguin

How strange. Like the Green For Stop thing

It is in keeping with the French contrary nature. ;>{ )

Re: [EE] LCD power supply

Hi Zik,

Roman Black (is he still here) has a low current 5v to 13.5v converter here

http://www.romanblack.com/smps/conv.htm

It may be what you are after.

[OT] new features in the archive browser

I've been playing about with a new feature in the archive browser and I
think it might be ready to announce. I'm a little nervous about the load it
puts on the server, but hopefully it will stay alive.

If you go to piclist.com and click on "archive" then "today" (or any day)
then "Thread" to sort the posts people sent that day by thread, clicking on
the subject of a thread will show (on the left side by default) the entire
conversation included in that tread.

Or if you like, just click on this for a demo:
http://www.piclist.com/techref/postbot.asp?by=time&id=piclist\2006\11\20&ord
er=thread then select a thread to view.

It tries to do a number of things that are darn hard.

- It tries to remove quoted text when it is extraneous, but NOT when it is
really being used. I'm sure it isn't really getting that right, and I would
love it if anyone could point out examples where it gets it wrong either by
not removing quoted text that should be remove or by removing quoted text
that should not be removed.

- It displays information about the poster (gleaned only from their email
address) on the right side of each post. If there is no picon for a domain,
some tricky JavaScript attempts to load a favicon from the domains web site,
but then falls back to just the text of the domain name if one is not found.
And it still wraps correctly in the columnar format for the little .com,
.net and .org's icons or into rows for country names and flags.

- It attempts to figure out what FAQ page applies to the subject at hand and
lists that at the top of the page. Minor A.I. application there. Real fun to

Re: [OT]:: Reading a persons attitude from their eyes.. .

I got 22... Tell you the truth.. 80 or 90% of the time I did not have any
idea on their emotions.... so maybe this where just more of luck maybe... I
thought there was a research done on this that its not really facial
expression we perceived that tells true human emotions but through some
hormones released through the skin, that the other person detects.. I
mean... You could look really angry or maybe act angry by changing your
facial expression or movements.. but ofcourse you are not really angry..
maybe this is how deception is perceived... so I would not bet my life on
the test..

Use signal generator to high power audio amp to old tube amplifier output
transformer wired backwards = high volt, high power sine wave.

You can also probably find an appropriate "power supply" transformer that
will work as well as the tube amp transformer.

I had to do this once to test a phase difference transducer used in power
plants to determine when it is safe to close a breaker (ie: you better be in
phase on both sides of the breaker). I built a little PIC app that generated
a 60Hz sinewave output. The actual frequency was slightly adjustable so I
could actually simulate a generator speeding up and slowing down in response
to control pulses from the system attempting to get the gen in phase with
the line before closing the breaker.
