Help setting up Sky Navigator remote to replace keyboard/mouse under X

I've purchased a (UK) Sky Navigator remote control which, apart from
being a decent quality remote control, contains a very convenient
QWERTY keyboard inside it. I have managed to find a couple of sites
that mention using it under X as a keyboard/mouse device but no
detailed information.

I currently use a Hauppauge remote and have PS2 keyboard and mouse
plugged in to my media PC, but I want to get rid of these and replace
with the Navigator remote using a serial port IR receiver.

My current LIRC setup uses customised sections in the lircrc file for
each application I use the remote with, but looking at 2 lircrc files
I have found for the Navigator remote:

1 file uses separate configs for each application, such as
myth,xine,mplayer (as I currently do) e.g.

begin
    prog = mythtv
    button = up
    repeat = 4
    config = Up
end

1 file exclusively uses irxevent blocks for each key, and CurrentWindow. e.g.

begin
    prog = irxevent
    remote = skyplus
    button = up

Packard Bell receiver on 2.6 kernel

Hi.

I recently upgraded my HTPC running Gentoo from kernel 2.4.26 to 2.6.11
and now I cannot make my Packard Bell serial receiver work with LIRC. I
tried LIRC 0.7.0 and 0.7.1 w/o a success.

I searched the Internet and found the same problem reported a few months
ago on LIRC list, but there was no answer to that.

just Gentoo and kernel 2.6.11 for me, but the rest is the same:

Google for kbdd - it's a user-space keyboard input for lirc among others.

home brew serial problems

I am running gentoo on a amd sempron 2400. I have built a homebrew receiver,
and it works on winlirc. I am trying to get it running on my Linux system. I
am running devfs, on kernel 2.6.11.7

when I do a irrecord i get:

irrecord -  application for recording IR-codes for usage with lirc

Copyright (C) 1998,1999 Christoph Bartelmus(lirc@...)

irrecord: could not open /dev/lirc
irrecord: default_init(): Is a directory
irrecord: could not init hardware (lircd running ? --> close it, check
permissions)

if I try running lircd --nodaemon i get :

 /usr/local/sbin/lircd --nodaemon
lircd 0.7.1: lircd(serial) ready
lircd 0.7.1: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd 0.7.1: could not open /dev/lirc
lircd 0.7.1: default_init(): Is a directory
lircd 0.7.1: caught signal
Terminated

i was wondering I might get some help with this

Kernel patch

Install trouble: can't find device

I have successfully built and installed lirc on my FC 2 
machine. I am using a serial IR adapter, purchased from 
zapway.de. The configure script gave me some trouble when it 
couldn't find my kernel scripts. I specified my kernel path, 
and it went smoothly from there. 

I am trying to test the device using the "mode2" tool. I get 
the following error message: 

mode2: error opening /dev/lirc 
mode2: No such device 

The device IS in /dev ! ls -l /dev/lir* gives me this: 

crw-r--r--  1 root root 61, 0 Apr 27 18:48 /dev/lirc 
prw-r--r--  1 root root     0 Apr 27 18:39 /dev/lircd 
prw-r--r--  1 root root     0 Apr 27 18:39 /dev/lircm 

What's going on? I suspect that the driver isn't finding my 
serial IR receiver, but I don't know what step to take next.

Is lirc_serial loaded?
What's the dmesg output of it?

Use the --device option to select the correct device. Probably something  
like /dev/lirc/0.

It appears that lirc_serial is NOT loaded. 

the command 

lsmod | grep lirc 

outputs: 

lirc_dev               17396  0 

I thought the setup.sh script had identified that I was 
using a serial adapter, but something apparently went wrong. 
I'm guessing this setting may have been lost because I was 
using some arguments with the ./configure script to specify 
my kernel path (the ./configure script orginally said it 
couldn't find my kernel sources). 

Okay, so how can I get lirc_serial up and running?
