I know I've been more quiet than all of us like for a bit, but getting the machines rolling again ;) This posting is about OSX though, to be specific. Right now I'm debating my build environment for maximum effect; I've always maintained a policy of being behind the curve since that tends to support others behind the curve, and those on the front generally have backwards compatibility. I build on Mac OSX 10.2.x still, and it all tends to work nicely for those up to 10.3 and usually even 10.4 as far as I'm aware. I do know a few people have had problems on 10.4, though I do not know if they're sporting PowerPC or Intel Macs in those cases; running a PPC build on the Intel arch machines works fine (inside of the Rosetta layer), though that in turn introduces its own oddities. I've got a G4 PPC machine and no intention of updating to an Intel Mac anytime soon, but 10.4 on PPC should still be able to produce a Universal binary when the time comes. I'm tempted right now to get a good solid 10.2 built release out, then go whole hog onto OSX 10.4 (since 10.5 is coming soon).. but I'm also tempted to go straight to 10.4 right now, and provide a Universal binary (application that includes builds for both PPC and Intel in one application.) That introduces some issues, but removes others, and at least lets me play on a more modern setup since 10.2 is years old and tends to annoy me a bit :) More to point, if I build a 10.2 now, then switcheroo to 10.4, immediately someone will find a problem on 10.2 .. so perhaps its best to just cut ahead and be done-with.(Continue reading)
And just for fun, we still use the LCIII at least weekly. For simple
text processing, Nisus Writer 5.1.3 on System 7.6 is as solid as
Shadow. Coal is getting hard to come by, though, to keep the
computer's steam pressure up.
