Time-Reason to switch?

Thanksfor your responses about my frustration with
Palm's poor platform support - especially Anita and
Kevin. More thoughts below...

I too switched to a Mobile PC device, but found it was
a short lasting switch. The lack of programs to
choose from was the first downer, then to find those I
could choose didn't have near the options as the Palm
programs, and thus my short lived switch ended and
I've not looked back to this point in time a year
later.

Cost me money to make the switch, from my pda, phone,
and the various programs I desired. I get frustrated
with Palm too, but have learned the key is to get the
important programs that are stable and try to stay
away from the desire to add and delete other programs.

Kevin, your experience is sobering; I *will* move
slowly in this. I had wondered if StyleTap would would
allow me to keep using Shadow and another
irreplaceable app, Participate, from Handshigh
Software - great for teachers. I have not been
fiddling with the configuration of the T3 for almost a
year. T3s, though, are suffering a digitizer problem

Cannot open SP file on Palm

I have been using Palm devices for about 9 years now, and I am a power
user. I purchased Shadow Plan about 2 months ago, and have been using
it extensively with "Getting Things Done" system. It has been working
great. I have basically one large file called "Projects", where I keep
a hierarchical list of projects and to-do items. The list has about
275 entries. Today when I attempted to open the list, I received the
message:

"Bad Load! The list could not be loaded!"

Can you please help me? Is the file corrupted? Is there some way to
view the file off the handheld (besides the desktop, because it will
not sync)?

I have become somewhat dependant on this system. I backed it up
yesterday, but I just finished adding a number of things to the list
today, and I do not want to lose them.

Thanks!

Re: I give up on Palm-alternatives to Shadow?

Sure, now you tell me! (-:

I went to the web page, and my guess that it's a Palm emulator
running unders Windows Mobile. I've seen 'problems' in the past with
such in the sense that the emulator is a completely closed in
environment.

When you run SP this way, is it able to link outside of StyleTap into
Pocket Outlook? Calendar, etc.

Or, are the results of your SP entries getting propogated back into
your Windows desktop Outlook?

(Sync'ing, in an emulator, through the host Windows Mobile, to the
desktop MS Windows, seems just a little weird.)

One answer might be that there is something on the list that is odd,
like a web page for example. Did you put anything on there like that,
or is it just text that you put in. I take it that you entered it on
the Palm itself since you cannot view it on the desktop.

What version of both Palm and Desktop do you have by the way?

There's the rub. I use Shadow solely as an outliner and I get my
files onto my Pocket PC by dragging and dropping the Shadow PDB files
via the Missing Sync (I use a Mac. On a PC, I'd use Active Sync).
Sync conduits do not NOT work with StyleTap.

Since I only use SP as an outliner (the exact same way I used it when
I owned a Palm device) I have never tried to do any linking. I just
now tested it and it doesn't. Since the built in Palm PIM DB's aren't
present there's nothing to link to. I know that DateBK5 does work
with StyleTap and and I'd imagine that with DB5 loaded, you could do

I've been bugging the StyleTap guys to expand their tool.. turn it
into a 'platform' more than a Palm OS emulator. ie: They should support
Pocket PC resolutions as virtual Palm resolutions, so that Palm OS apps
could use the full display of the Pocket PC. Support options to allow the
Palm OS app to use Pocket PC fonts and control the Pocket PC virtual
grafitti.. and use menus at the bottom instead of the top. Voila, a Pal OS
app that looks and feals more like a Pocket PC app. Intgrate the clipboard
between the OSes, and allow linking and such to work as one expects.. they
could make it so that rewriting apps from scratch on Pocket PC isn't
necessary.

They're intrigued by the idea, but slow moving on it .. I've been
slowly working on a Pocket PC version of the applicatoin, but its still a
ways off yet. (Shadow Desktop is of course designed to work with such an
eventuality.)

# Honestly, if you want to go the Windows Mobile route and retain the
# functionality that you have in Shadow with linking, you'd have to use

	A couple things here ..

"Bad load" .. is damned rare (ie: few will ever see it), but these
days it is almost always caused by bugs in the OS (yay!) .. the main one
being where you copy a file out to SD and try to open it from there. (In
the latest round of devices, Palm broke their OS routines for moving files
to and from SD cards. Files with 'deleted' records and other stuff can
sometimes refuse to import back to RAM. Brilliant :/) For folks who see
Bad Load, it almost always is that case.. loading it from SD and Shadow
can't fetch it through the OS. (Due to bugs like that, I often tell people
now to keep files in RAM, and apps and toss-away data on SD.. like mp3s,
web feeds, etc.)

If it is trashed somehow or another in RAM (super rare!), then it

RE: ShadowPlan on my Lifedrive

I've not had reports of many crashes from LD folks, except the
'normal LD crashes' :) The LD is a pretty nifty device, but it does have
some nits that get in there (mostly due to tight RAM due to all its hard
drive caching and such.) Most crashes I've researched turn into 'too much
stuff in memory' .. some apps forcully staying in cache to keep speed up,
but making other apps unable to fit, or background tasks, or mods/hacks ..
things getting into the OS. Shadow plays by the rules pretty carefully,
but with the LD especially.. it is easy for various apps to fight with
each other :/

Re: Help! SP files apparently gone - or at least, off the file list!

Every once in awhile since the latest OS has come out, this sort
of thing comes up (and not just with Shadow); theres some bug in the OS
where when it copies files between flash ram and cache or the like that it
can crash, and when you reboot.. the file is gone. This is so terribly
rare that I've not gotten enough reports to observe a pattern.. I think
I've seen about 5 or 6 reports total, 2 or 3 from one person. A couple of
those were crashes in _other applications_, and Shadow files (among
others) had vanished.. so it makes little sense. Few ever see such a
thing.

Since the last year of devices (all very good, but a little
flaky!) I suggest always using a backup tool (I use BackupMan.)

I know every month or two I will wake up in the morning and check
my meetings.. and find 70% of my files missing. (ie: ZLauncher will
appear, and all or most apps present.. but addresses, Shadow files,
games.. you name it.. just gone.) So for me, sometime in the night, it
occurs.. but thats different, since its most files not just one or two :P
In those cases I just restore and go (I have BackupMan do a nightly
backup.)

(I do not think it is BackupMan as the cause, but its possible :P)

Oh, don't even go there, please! Release a good version when it's
ready. I can live with Shadow under StyleTap until then! (Although I
don't think you have to worry too much about the competition in the
WM world. I'm pretty sure I tried every program that can possibly be
a competitor and the closest I found to Shadow is TreNotes which is
still not in Shadow's league).
