Re: Timetable for Desktop

Hi Jeff,
I've been following the Desktop debate with interest as I have had a number of gripes with
palm/desktop apps over the years that don't port well to Macs. I flick between Windows
and OSX environments and the OSX versions always get chopped or don't behave well.
You mentioned the shadow-test list. How do you join this list as I would be interested to
contribute if possible ?
Cheers
Darren

ShadowPlan and Linux

I am in the process of upgrading from Windows XP to Linux. I use
Shadow Plan on my desktop nearly as much as I do on my Palm (and
sometimes more!). What are my options for continuing to do so under Linux?

Jeff has developed and released a Linux version of the Desktop. While you
don't get the fancy hotsync conduits you do get nearly an identical version
of the desktop (from what I can remember).

There is a version of the desktop for Linux. It's not as far along as the
Windows version. There are also conduits which will transfer files to and
from you PDA. The best suite of programs is called pilot-link and it will
likely come with whatever distribution of Linux you choose. Read the
documentation.

Be aware that this is not a true sync. If you transfer your files to the
PDA, it overwrites the file that's there and vice-versa. You have to modify
the file in one place and sync before modifying it further in the other
place.

Shadow and productivity

Hi,

I tried to post these questions on the shadow tips yahoogroup, but
have a feeling the moderators may not have let it through. Maybe
this group is the more appropriate place for questions, even from a
newbie. I apologize if the questions end up being duplicated in the
two groups.

I bought Shadow (Palm & desktop) quite a while ago, but (horror!) I
still haven't used it much at all. Somehow it appears a bit too
complex to me, though I may be mistaken.

For my daily to do list, I use Agendus, but I find the to do list
lacking. I find that I keep listing to dos, but end up with an
unwieldy and overwhelming to do list that doesn't seem to get
shorter. I suspect Shadow has the potential to be a more organized
and productive overall to do list, partly because of the
satisfaction of seeing 'projects' nearing completion as each child
task is ticked off.

I don't know how to approach Shadow, though: as a note-taking app,
to do list, or project manager? Are many of you using it as your
main to do app?

Secondly, even though I know I can keep Shadow on the memory card
and sync from there, is it 'better' to keep it in my handheld's main
memory, if I am to use it as my main to do app? I used Zlauncher to
move Shadow to the card, and it does take a few seconds to load
Shadow every time I want to launch it, especially if I also have
some of my lists on the card. I use a Zire 71 with 2.6 MB currently

It's all of the above and more, my friend. I currently use it
primarily for note taking and as
a replacement for my native to do list, but occasionally use it for
simple project
management and developing presentation outlines. It's not my main
app, but a close
second to DateBk5 based solely on frequency of use. To approach
Shadow,
I suggest using the
'Task' list option to get the basics down, then experiment from
there. Before you do
either, start reading the user manual - it's long, but you WILL NOT
regret it. I think you
can cover most of what you need within an hour. Keep you handheld
close by as you read
it and test drive each feature you read about. It's actually fun to
do so and it gets you in
the rhythm of using various features pretty quickly.

Thanks for your helpful pointers. Will 'approach' Shadow again...

SP feature requests - filter on create data and date certain

I have two related features to suggest.

1 - Allow use of "create date" in filters. Usage: I have a variety
of notes that I would like to view in chronological order by the
date they were created. SP generates a "create date" field and
populates it, but it isn't available for filtering(so far as I can
tell). I can set a target date or finish date to do this, but why
not make "create date" usable for filtering?

2 - Related to above. So far as I can see there is no way to
specify a specific (target, start, finish) date for a filter.
Others have said that this is a long standing request, so I'll just
add my two bits worth in support of the idea. But I would add that
if the ability to filter on "create date" is added, that it would
also be useful to have this "date certain" option available.

Thanks for your continuing support of an app that benefits a lot of
folks.
