Re: sync problem - ShadP-*Sync* DB still a problem

I'm sorry to be a pest, but I still don't have this solved. Jeff, I
know you've been very busy lately, but could you help me figure this
out? Thanks, Bill

Re: Toys

Thanks, Jeff!

I see they've officially displayed it on the PalmOne site today, and
removed ALL non-Zire, non-Tungsten products from the "current" line.
On other forums there are comments about transfer problems from
previous models (like my m515). Also, a lot of discussion about the
landscape mode and compatibility/usability with existing software.
So..what's your experience so far?

Also, what, if anything:
1. don't you like
2. would prevent this from being the most powerful choice (sans a
camera for those who need one) in handhelds?

Thanks!

P.S. - working hard with Shadow to use it as a control center--will
really make use of the item-to-item link between Shadow files when
available!

I'm in the "charging" phase, but let me answer as best I can so
far.

All PDA devices have a transfer issue, its just most peopel dont'
experience. But consider.. if you did a straight backup from a black and
white Palm original and went to a T3 with a restore, you'd break
things. IT just seems natural, right? :) Data files for the OS from OS1
wont' go into OS5 very well. LEss extreme.. consider OS4 to OS5. Should it
work? The answer is less clear.. "most of the time". IT gets worse when
you cross brsnds.. from say Sony OS4 to PAlm OS4 or Palm OS5, you're bound
to run into "some" problem.

Palm advises to use a "new hotsyunc ID" for new devices to dodge
this reason. Of course, thats a registration hastle for applications, so
heres what I do.. ands never had a problem. And you know how many units
I've been through :)

Don't follow this unless you're seriously on the ball ;)

	1) Full back up old device (hotsync, backupman, backupbuddy, etc)
	2) Move your old Hotsync directory on your desktop somewhere else!

Mind Manager and Shadow

The new version of Mindmanager is based on XML (see below). Does this
mean that Shadow files could be easily converted/imported to
Mindmanager and vice versa?

Thanks

David

______________________________________________________________________
X5's native file format is XML. A .mmap file contains the XML, schema and
preview image, making it a very open system. As you say, a MindManager map
could not be fully encoded as a Topic Map, because of all the
MindManager-specific features.

XML compatibility means that XSLT can be used to exchange
MindManager's XML
with other formats, such as Topic Maps. Exchanging MindManager maps with
other XML-based applications will no longer depend on a proprietary
interface. MindManager's file format was never published in the past, and
the required access to the API meant that import/export was usually only
practical where programmatic access to MindManager was available.

This means that we can expect to see much better integration with other
XML-based applications, including interchange with non-Windows based
software. It also means that MindManager maps can potentially be accessed
and processed without MindManager software itself being present.

For end-users, rather than being an immediate solution, XML represents
more
of a platform for future directions and integration. There are some early

T3 RAM in case you care

The T|T3 has a little more than 11MB of heap (runtime
application) RAM; the T|T1 and T|T2 both only had 700k of application
runtime RAM, so this is a huge improvement. (Sony units traditionally have
much more heap, hence more multimedia abilities, but this catches and
passes them :)

Since I'm about to replace my m500 with a T3, I appreciate your little
walk through. In questions though:

I sync my handheld at two computers. Should I follow your steps at one of
them, and delete my Hotsync at the other before my first sync with my T3?

Rumor has it that the new datebook application in the T3 now supports
categories. Is this true?

Yes; you don't want to mix files "accidentlaly" between the two OS
versions, but its fine to do so under your own control. So do the big
change over on the one, and then clear the second and a fresh sync will
copuy it all down, and then you're good to go.
