Re: Capturing Thoughts Quickly on the PC

Well that looks pretty cool.

This is something I wanted to solve as well. I'm a Bonsai user, but
it's not always open if I'm working in project or excel or on emails....

I use an AutoHotKey script, http://www.autohotkey.com/, to fire up a
blank notepad at a keystroke (I use Win + N). I type out the fleeting
thought, then go back to work. Every hour or so, I copy this text to
the palm using Vikao,
http://www.mayeticvillage.com/home.nsf/Pages/Vikaoforpalm. Vikao is a
seperate palm app. Once or twice a day, after a sync, I go through
that app, copying those different pieces of text to wherever they need
to be, memos, tasks, calendar entries, Bonsai entries, etc.

This must be a great setup for me, I've used it for years despite all
of the "must-have" apps that I've purchased.

There's a bit of a learning curve with the AutoHotkey, I'm sure it
works just as well with Autoit, or any other macro, scripting
programs. The Vikao app doesn't seem to be mentioned much, it sure is
a jewel.

I have both and now that the alpha version of the Desktop is as good as
it is, I am using it at work in Windows for my planning. I don't
generally take work home, but I sync my palm and have it with me. The
current stable Desktop is good, but the alpha is just about ready to
become stable and it is very nice.

On the Palm you can link Shadow items to Tasks/Todo and
Calendar/Datebook. I used Datebk6 which puts those together as well as
letting you look into the addresses, make all sorts of links and lots of
neat things. The linking from Shadow to the Palm PIM is wonderful GTD
feature of Shadow for me.

In the Desktop you work with links to the PIMS of course, because there
is no connection to the palm. There is development in progress for
feature to check for link to Tasks so that when you sync the palm, the
link will be made after the sync. That will also show you on the
Desktop if there is a link already in place.

Shadow has its own conduit for the sync. As for DateBk, there is no
separate desktop app. One uses the Palm Desktop for that program,
because it uses the Palm databases.

I had to make those two corrections for clarification. Better have that
coffee now, I guess. ;-)

You can just use the shooter in Ecco. Alt-control S brings up the menu and
you go to "add by form". You can have a form set up called "Inbasket" which
sends it to your inbox in Ecco.

Admittedly that isn't exactly one key press but the whole process takes
about 2 seconds so it's still pretty fast.

Do you know if there are any plans to make the Linux desktop run on Macs
running linux? I can't get it to load at all on my Mac.

RE: Digest Number 1892

I love Bonsai but was hoping that Life Balance users didn't need it since
Life Balance can outline!

You know, it's funny that I'm such a big Bonsai fan and the same folks make
Daynotez and I've never understood the excitement over that product. I am
experiencing a growing need to journal so I may have to try that again. What
do you think of Daynotez so far?

My experience has been similar - except that I still use Bonsai now
as a checklist tool (mainly to remind me about tasks that must all be
done every day, for example taking vitamin supplements) - it's very
good at that. I'm now trying Daynotez too, for information storage,
as a replacement for Memo Plus...

Re: Capturing Thoughts Quickly on the PC

If you want to open up a blank notepad with a keystroke, you don't
need
to purchase any extra programs. In Windows, just right click on any
shortcut to Notepad, select Properties, and choose a Shortcut Key by
typing a Ctrl-Alt+Key or Ctrl-Shift+Key combination (the F keys also
work). My combination for Notepad Ctrl-Alt-N, and I have similar
combinations for all apps I use often.

Best,
Lena

Another program worth checking out (and one that DA has recommended)
is ActiveWords. I use it all the time, and I love it - but that's
mainly because I'm a keyboard-biased user. I avoid using the mouse
where possible.

Check it out if you haven't done so:

Funny you should ask. I was going to use it to store reference
material, but after reading someone else's suggestion on this list in
the past day or two, I had a change of heart and went for Bonsai! So
I've transferred all my Memo Plus reference notes into Bonsai now,
and I'm very pleased with it.

I think Daynotez will stay installed. I've paid for it, and I quite
like it. But like you, I'm not too sure exactly how I'm supposed to
make it work hard for me. I'll keep it around in case I want it for
work (meeting notes), a travel blog or something. It might also be a
good place to write "philosophical" thoughts, i.e. things with no
immediate (or even eventual) practical value, but which you want to
keep for their beauty, logic or humour.

Bonsai and Life Balance are my current heroes - they ROCK (as the
youngsters say). :)

Re: Re: Capturing Thoughts Quickly on the PC

I have just started using ShortKeys. It's not *exactly* for what you are
talking about here. But has some of the same features and is pretty
cheap...

Also, FYI incase anybody is already a SK user....here is my setup for
automating category assingment for the graphical weekly view in Outlook on
Windows DT.
"[enter]
[enter]
<ALT>g<TAB><TAB><TAB><TAB>categoryName[enter]
<TAB><TAB>[enter]
<ALT>f<SHIFT>c[enter]"
From within Outlook graphic week view, click-n-drag to select the block of
time, type the name of the appointment, then type your ShortKey trigger and
outlook will set the category and return to graphic week view lickity-split!

"[enter]" doesn't actually show up, you just hit the enter button on the
keyboard.
