RE: Re: To-do list item: Dump the PDA

Thanks for the laugh. Since my daughter is in soccer I guess that makes
me a 'soccer mom' and I'm on my 3rd PDA. The funny thing is I am stuck
using paper at the moment because my T3 died suddenly and is off to palm
to be replaced. I HATE using paper and it's driving me nuts. I have to
refer to my laptop constantly to keep on top of things. I started
making a list of reasons why I miss my palm:

I keep reaching for the Voice Recorder
I have NO Wake-Up Alarm (using my husband's palm for this function)
Alarm Reminders (have to keep looking at Outlook)
Calculator (I never knew how much I used this app)

Most of all I miss the convenience. I could have used it today when...

I was stuck in an office waiting for a virus scan to complete...
The network got hosed and during the repair we needed to look up a
vendor address...
I was paying bills and needed a calculator...
I wanted to refer to my task list at home during lunch with out having
to bring the laptop home.

I could go on...but you get the point. I am considering backing up my
husband's data to the desktop and loading my stuff on his palm (my old
sony clie T615C). He wouldn't miss it for a week. He is not into it as
much as I am. It is a paper weight to him most of the time! Oh well.
I am surviving, but it's not fun!

Alexia,

I am even odder than you<g> as I only use a cell phone in an emergency
or if I can't until I get home to make a call. Obviously, I am not
giving up my palm.

Re: Memo App for desktop

Lena,

What I get (if I post some memos into the desktop editor and then add
a lot of text, so that some of the original memos are now larger than
4k) is some of the memos splitting automatically when pasting back
into Palm Desktop.

Palm adds a digit next to the memo titles that are split, starting
with 1. The category that I just played with to test is "Next Task
Asap". And it didn't put this category name anywhere in the memos
themselves, in case you were wondering that.

This is what I expected.

If you're not getting the expected results, make sure that Notetab is
generating a 'page break' between the memos right after pasting. This
is a hex '0C'.

Newbie at school

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie to this GtD stuff, and haven't read any of the books. I
recently installed LifeBalance and have been following the PDF guide
on how to set it up with Home and Work. However, I was wondering if
anyone here is a student, who has fine-tuned this setup to work
better with university life. Thanks!

I use LifeBalance and GTD to keep track of work and school. Works
nicely.

I have made an exchange file with the data for one of my classes
available at http://ambarconsulting.com/chem-export.lbe -- of note:

Places are <at> CSU Hayward, <at> Textbooks, and <at> Nowhere. (that last, always
closed, is used for giving myself credit for working with my flash
cards. I don't want it to appear on a list of next actions, but I want
to give myself credit when I pick them up.)

The general trick is that assignments are set By Due Date and
<at> Textbooks. Quizzes and test are set By Calendar, and <at> CSU Hayward.
Putting them on the calendar ensures I get the advance notice I need.
Another tip: if at all possible, keep your lead times on these items
consistent. Otherwise you could have an orange item a week away sorted
above a green item which is due that day, if the green item has 2 days
lead and the orange item had a month's lead. I choose 3 days lead on
most "read before class" items. Bigger things, like research reports

ToDo app in OS 5 devices

I'm the owner of a well-worn Palm Vx and I was just checking out some
of the new PDAs at my local CompUSA. I was surprised to find that Sony
and Palm have mucked with some of the aspects of the Palm
(particularly the ToDo app) that I love. Well, some of the devices,
the Sonys in particular, have replaced the apps with their own stuff
and/or have replaced the launcher with their own.

The T3 and TE seem to have replaced the ToDo app with a "Tasks" app
that is missing the "Show only due" checkbox and had some extra
dooodads in the user interface that I couldn't figure out. I also was
disappointed to find that pressing the ToDo button repeatedly didn't
cycle through the categories. Then I found the T2, which had a ToDo
app that looked like the one I know and love. Except that again,
pressing the ToDo button didn't cycle throught the categories (it
didn't seem to do anything). I looked for a preference setting that
could change the behavior but didn't find it.

Did they really take out this simple but handy feature in Palm OS 5?
What other little surprises await me when I move to an OS 5 device
(the Treo 600 in particular has caught my eye :-))?

RE: ToDo app in OS 5 devices

I just upgraded to a t3 last week. The tasks program has 3 tabs at the top,
All, that shows dates and categories,
Dates, that has a sort by due today, next 7, last 7 and past due,
Category allows you to sort by category.
If I push the task button repeatedly, it goes thru each of these options,
first all, then the date sorts, then the category sorts

The calendar has context for appts and allows you to sort appts by category
too. One thing... the calendar does not sort by context, it only enters the
context after the appt.

Something else that came as a surprise on the t3 for me... Their is a little
squiggle line at the bottom of the screen, that allows you to enter graffiti
anywhere on the screen.

I took at look at the Sonys the other day and noticed the new launcher. I
really hate that stuff. Why do they insist on preventing you from
customizing your own stuff? Can you turn things like that off?

Re: ToDo app in OS 5 devices

Hi,

I use a T2 myselfe and I can cycle through the todo-categories. Try
to do the following. Go to the preferences of the T2 put another app.
to the todo-button for a second and than turn it back to todo´s.
Afterwards you should be able to cycle again.

Regards.

How can I export a Memo to To-Do?

Hello all,

I'm new to GTD and working through the early stages. In line with the book
I've captured all my 'stuff' (well most of it!). I did this by creating a
'memo' on my T3 for each item. Some of these are 'projects' as defined by
David - but most are 'actions'

To save me some time now and to make future capturing more easy I'm looking
for an app that will export a memo (usually a 'one liner' such as 'fix
mirror at top of stairs') into the To-Do database.

Anyone know of such an app?

Thanks in advance :-)

John
