New battery?

My 770 has developed an annoying habit of hanging while I'm in the
middle of reading in FBReader. (I don't use it often enough for
anything else to tell whether it also happens in other programs.)

It's always had a power management problem where I sometimes pick it
up and need to take the battery out to get it started. This new
problem is happening while I'm actually reading -- I go to turn the
page, and the page doesn't turn and nothing else (full-screen button,
off button...) seems to work either, until I take the battery out and
reboot.

I don't think any software has changed to initiate this problem.

So I'm wondering whether it means the battery is getting old and
whether it's likely that I could fix it by buying a new battery?

A computer is like a violin. You can imagine a novice trying first a
phonograph and then a violin. The latter, he says, sounds
terrible. That is the argument we have heard from our humanists and
most of our computer scientists. Computer programs are good, they say,
for particular purposes, but they aren't flexible. Neither is a
violin, or a typewriter, until you learn how to use it.

Dear Laura,
I'm not sure whether it's battery related or not, but I have a few tips
that may help. Do you have virtual memory enabled? <control panel>
<memory> <virtual> The larger the memory card, the more virtual memory
you can have and the better programs run. I'm sure there's a limit to
the size of the virtual memory but I've not found it. Use the

No. I just tried enabling it, and it said "unable to create virtual
memory".

no updates available.

Since I mostly use it to read books, I prefer not to connect
automatically, so that the battery usage is lower. Or does the
automatic refresh only happen automatically when you connect manually?

Then I would guess that you do not have a memory card inserted in the
external slot. See if you can borrow one to test that and see if it
makes a difference for you. RS MMC's are a little scarce though,
hopefully you have one. In any case I would highly recommend buying a
card and enabling virtual memory. Before you spend any money please see
my comments below.

Then the card is to full to have enough room for the swap partition.

Yes, I do. That's what I read the books off of all the time.

It's been fine for a year or so. It's in the last month I've been
having this (new) hanging problem.

Maybe your memory card FAT file system is corrupted[1] and because
of this the device has made it read-only?

[1] Microsoft FAT file system corrupts easily. All you need for that
is unplugging the device USB cable without using "safely remove",
taking the card or battery out, or device rebooting while there
are unfinished writes to the memory card...

I would recommend checking the card file system on PC to see whether
the it has issues, that could cause all kinds of trouble for the device.
You can use PC to repair the file system, but simplest might be just
reformatting the card and copying the data again to it.

[ANN] Script to convert waypoints to MaemoMapper POIs

Hi,

I've just written a small Ruby script which can convert GPX waypoints to a
sqlite file to be used in MaemoMapper:
http://www.christeck.de/wp/?page_id=236

Additionally I have updated the POIs for europe this weekend, so there's some
material to play with the above script :) :

Hope you like it,

Re: [ANN] Script to convert waypoints to MaemoMapper POIs

That's great, except I don't get over to Europe that much. Plus I've got a dedicated nav system for the car.

Personally, I think it would be nice if there were some sort of GPS topo application for backpacking on and off trail.  Toss in a small solar panel that hangs on the top of my pack while hiking, and I'd be good to go...   A bit nerdish, but who cares when your hiking balls out, way off trail in the high Yosemite backcountry?

Always, Fred C
