Familiar 0.8.1 snapshots available for testing

Hello,

It's now three weeks before the release deadline and it is time to
release snapshots to the public. Get the snapshots at
http://handhelds.org/~koen/index.php?path=familiar%2Fv0.8.1-snapshot/
You can see what's changed in OE at
http://openembedded.bkbits.net:8080/openembedded/ChangeSet <at> -40d?
nav=index.html

Now please pay attention to the following:

* GPE bugs -> gpe <at> handhelds.org
* Opie bugs -> ope <at> handhelds.org
* all that's left -> familiar <at> handhelds.org

All reported bugs and fixes will be available at
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/FamiliarReleaseNotes

So before starting up your email client to tell us tat something is
broken, please check the wiki first. Feel free to add bugs to the wiki,
but please put a small description in the changelog line. It breaks the
rss feed when left empty.

Enjoy!

Koen

PS: when I have some time I'll write a changelog with the changes from
0.8.0

Good work. Are these equivalent to the current state of the unstable
feed?

Yes, although much versions have been hardcoded. I'll try to
incorporate newer versions when they come available and have proven to
be working well.

New directory structure ?

Hi there,

after testing new Familiar 081 with GPE I tested OPIE too and I think that
there is new directory structure.
I am not really sure but is it new?

/home/root			simultaneously with /root
/home/QtPalmtop	simultaneously with /opt/QtPalmtop

I feel this leads to problems installing new apps?

Also new /media/cf && /media/card linked to old ones.

Bye Pb

Short stroy: no.
Longer story: If you can convince Toshiba to release the specs for their
devices (or the e800) then it can be done. And I am pretty sure that it
would be done then.
But as long as hardware vendors keep the specs for themselves (if their
OEM manufacturer did give them to the vendor :) there will be no Linux
support for those.

Very sorry!

ut you can help us (and yourself maybe): Write an email to Toshiba.
Describe that you would be very interested in Linux on their PDAs. Tell
them why, if possible. And tell them that you are pretty disappointed
that they do not support the OpenSource community.

If we can raise enough attention we might be able to convince them that
there *is* a market for Linux PDAs out there...

GPE Documentation

Hi all,

i started to do add some API documentation to GPE sources.
I'm using gtk-doc which seems to work quite nice so far.

This link contains some collected information about gtk-doc, the
documentation we have so far and some information how to add
documentation to a GPE library.
http://www.kernelconcepts.de/~fuchs/gpe/doc/

Any comments, bug reports and in particular help is really welcome!

Greetings

Florian

GPE Roadmap

Hello,

Now GPE is maturing quite well a clear roadmap would be a nice thing to
have. After some discussion on IRC a few ideas came forth. I decided to
throw the question on the mailinglist to have some input from all of
you.

The 'roadmap' sofar:

* Release a *stable* 3.0 soon (6 months)
	o Make 2.7 a testing/unstable version
	o Make 2.8 a final beta
	o freeze and tag known stable apps in CVS

With the following items:

*  Work on documentation
	o userdocs on website
	o small howto's (setting up gprs over bluetooth/irda)
	o API docs (see www.kernelconcepts.de/~fuchs/gpe/doc/)
	o put clear goals on the website
* Desktop connectivity
	o syncing with multisync/opensync
	o backup app
* Useability
	o iron out annoyances and inconsistancies
	o compare features with opie and WM2003
* Presentation
	o update the website
	o more themes!

As you say GPE is maturing well nowadays and is plentiful application
wise. IMHO it is time to focus on improving GPE's foundations and
structure as a project making it more proffesional and applealing to
new developers, as well as having it taken more seriously by projects
such as GNOME.

I misplaced that item, because I was getting at a 'usefull feature'
comparison where 'usefull feature' is something like backup software or
a documents tab. The implemention that opie/wm2003 have of those
features may or may not suck, but we can always steal their ideas :)

Koen
