What about Agenda's PIM software

I'm a potential user, not a developer. Is the PIM software developed for the agenda being considered as a
starting point? If not the interface (based on FLTK), then the inner workings?

Does anyone know of a project site dedicated to this software?

We thought about it, yes, but decided against it.
Mainly because of three important issues:
- To rip-off the GUI from the inner workings is a very tough job and
comprable to a rewrite.
- The Agenda apps are very primitive. Goal should be something more
sophisticated.
- The Agenda have no real good common concepts underneith. We wanted to
use a common storage, namely SQLite, for all applications that store data.
On top a common API for synchronisation of data should also be braught in
place. We thought about using SyncML but the SyncML consortium did not yet
answer our repeated request for licensing information. Their web-site is
quite unclear about it.

Look at Agenda's site. They have public CVS and discussion groups for it.

A couple of questions

I am new to linux on the ipaq, only first installed it 2 weeks ago. I
looked at qtopia and while it was nice looking, I am not sure that is
the route I want to go. I think I would prefer a true linux like system
running x and so on. It would appear that gpe is going to be more my
style. The posting on familiar that lead me to this project mentioned a
release for gpe is imminent. So I was wondering what the time table is
on this and if all the PIM functions will be in the release.

Right now I have ion running with a couple of small utility apps,
nothing truly functional at the moment, just plinking around. So I
wouldn't mind installing the gpe packages if you could use another
person to test them. If someone could point me to them I would
appreciate it. If the link is on the page I am sorry, but I keep
missing it.

In my package manger the only gpe related item I have is gpe-appmgrz.
The only ipkg source I have at the moment is:
familiar.handhelds.org/familiar/feeds/unstable/packages/armv4l.

Anyway I would like to try and get involved.

Thanks,

Jerry

Not in the first release, no. Only things I mentioned in that post will
released with the first release AFAIK. (This probably excludes the MP3
player 'cos it crashes too much ATM :)

ATM The best you could hope for is the current GPE apps, and the other
Gtk-based PIM apps (Mingle, Notepaq, Toad, Chronicle).

Probable first-release packages:
 matchbox
 gpe-appmgr
 tetris/solitaire
 gnotepad
 system control applets
and a few other bits & pieces,

There is, to my knowledge, no specific timeline set up yet except for
"get the first release out of the door soonish".

sqlLite

Just out of curiosity is anybody else hacking a networked lightweight
sqld?

I have started working on a really basic sqlite-based sql daemon, which
while not giving you a huge advantage over basic libsqlite should be a
start.

I know about gadfly but i figure something native might give a bit more
flexibility in the long run, basically at the moment my api is more or
less equivalent to the current sqlite one (i.e. ODBC-like).

Hmm ... my version currently mostly works ;) At least it does not crash
though the playlist handling is as we know not what we wish. But at least
it works ;)

Which will not be part of GPE however.

Was there ever a final resolution to the debate on how and where PIM

IIRC correctly the consens was to use SQLite now and see if it works for
it. We have almost no other choice. Maybe we should an additional glue
library on top of SQLite to allow for example easy querying of multiple
databases (think of internal and external storage space for example).
But basically, yes there was a resolution: SQLite ;)

SQL tables, I believe, but no one has proposed as formal schema.

Re: A couple of questions

Thanks to both you and Robert for your reply's. So it seems like the
suggested course of action at this time is to sit tight and watch the
list for announcements. I can do that. :) Anyway, I did install mingle,
chronicle, notepaq and toad yesterday, however that is still all under
ion. But heck it's something to fiddle with while watching the
Olympics.
