Msg:Parse

Hello Alan,

I have some free time and would like to complete the Msg::Parse. Before I code, to better understand couple of the communication protocol messages, I would like to discuss them..

PM(private message) & M(message):

How are messages send to offline users:

When PM& M messages are send and the recipient is offline then do we store the message(s) and show them next time the recipient login?

We can do this by adding attribute message_list to the user attribute list.

Who deletes messages:

Once the message(s) are shown do we delete them automatically or the user has the option to delete the message(s). If the user is responsible of deleting the message(s) then we may need, delete message (DM M_ID), in the communication protocol. If the user deletes message then just adding the message_list to the user attribute list may not work.

Which messages are shown?

Do we only show new messages or all the messages?

Thanks,

Shilpa

Re: Msg:Parse

Shilpa,

IIRC, those are more like instant messages. So once they're delivered, they are deleted.

I think we talked about keeping the messages if the user is offline.

Hey Alan,

That's great news! It's good to see that Shilpa and Neeraj are still around too - do you two still wish to help out with the coding?

I am definitely interested in renewing the development of Mira. It would be good to find out who is still keen on contributing and, depending on the number of active developers, recruit some more coders to help out.

Max Bossino

Re: Anybody out there?

We definitely do need more developers. I just got done getting the client to discover itself (and other clients) over a LAN (http://aliencoder.blogspot.com). I'm going to start re-doing the client base network code in a few hours to integrate well with it. Hopefully I'll get it done sometime today or tomorrow.

After that I plan to get basic instant messaging working (peer-to-peer messages and file transfer).

We should plan an IRC meeting soon to see how to go about things. I have some ideas about changes we should probably make.

Re: Anybody out there?

Hi Alan,

Great work. We weren't planning on having LAN discovery available from the beginning, but it will be useful to have for future releases when we begin to make more use of it.

Have you spoken to Shilpa about instant messaging? I was under the impression that she was going to code this as well as the Private Messaging system, but if you're familiar with IM (and she hasn't started it) then by all means work on it yourself.

Regards,

-Max

IRC Meeting

Dear all,

I agree with Alan in that we should have an IRC meeting some time this
weekend to see where we stand. What time (in UTC) is convenient for
most people on a weekday (such as Thursday)? I'm going to be very tied
up this weekend, which is why I'd rather a weekday.

If we struggle to find a mutually convenient time, we could just use
Skype or hang around on our IRC channel until another developer goes
online.

Re: Msg:Parse

Hello Shilpa,

With PM messages, the messages are stored on the Server until the recipient logs in. The messages are then pushed to the user when her Client connects to the Server.
Having thought about this, all PM messages should be stored on the Server so that a user who logs on using two different Clients will see the same PM messages on both Clients. So, for example, if the user John has 2 read PM messages and 1 unread PM message, these would all be stored on the Server. If John then deletes one of the read PM messages on his Client, this PM message is also deleted from the Server (using a new protocol such as DM, as Shilpa suggested). If John then logs on using a different Client which has already downloaded the two read PM messages, one of those PM messages will be deleted from his Client and the new, unread PM message will be pushed to his Client.

As for M messages, which are part of Instant Messaging, we said it would be useful to show a backlog of, say, 20 messages, but I think this should just be instantaneous to start with. In other words, an M message would just be sent to all of the Workplace members who are online at that moment.
Bear in mind that we'd have the Discussion Utility for longer conversations. :)

I hope that helps somewhat.
