Thanks GSR for Your reply.

I know about that bug but I don't think it does concern the fresnel effect. In
my test setup with the wine glas and the glas cubes the cubes look all right
but the outside of the glas bowl reflects the surrounding too much although it
is empty.
It looks like glas that was sputtered with a mettal from the outside (I did
that in my physics theses). It's too close to a normal mirror. The front scene
with the cubes is fully visible in the glas which shouldn't be for a normal
unsputtered glas.
Using the blender internal raytracer this effect can be nicly controlled by
the two fresnel parameters and those adviced realistic parameters (5 and 1.25)
yield a very realistic result. But a far smaller fresnell value is necessary
to achiev the same effect with blender internal as yafray gives with a fresnel

Fresnel effect too dominant for IOR=1.5

Hello!

First of all thanks for the great free raytracer. I started with blender/yafray a few weeks ago and am very
impressed what can be done with it.
But when trying to get a realistic wine glas with yafray and caustics I got stuck reducing the fresnel
effect. In the net I found a statement that it would be implicit linked to IOR. Comparing it with the blender
internal raytracer and physical values (5 and 1.25,
http://www-nw.uni-regensburg.de/~.grr06742.back.physik.uni-regensburg.de/BLENDER/GLAS_B~1.PNG)
it is obviously too dominant (freoff= 1.25:
http://www-nw.uni-regensburg.de/~.grr06742.back.physik.uni-regensburg.de/BLENDER/GLAS_B~2.PNG)
in yafray pics even if the fresnel offset is set to the maximum of 5 (freoff= 5.00: http://www-nw.uni-regensburg.de/~.grr06742.back.physik.uni-regensburg.de/BLENDER/GLAS_B~3.PNG).
I would like to know where the strength of the fresnel effect is set in the code of yafray or how to influence it
in the xml code (I couldn't find any docs on that and changing the fresnel offset to negativ values in the xml
file didn't help).

By the way: When disableing RayMirror in the Blender yafray settings the fresnel effect does not
disappear. It just seems to influence the shading ad the sides of the glas.
I'm using yafray 0.9 and blender 2.45.

Any help or hints apreciated

lamps shine through meshes in blender

After anxiously awaiting a render of a commercial tug
boat using Yafray, I was disappointed to see the lamps
in Blender shining through the meshes above the lamp.
The lamp button "layer" function (illuminating only
those things on the same layer as the lamp) did not
seem to make any difference. Is this a bug or am I
missing something?

Thank you. This is a great product and look forward to
future developments.

CVS connection timed out

Hello,

Let me start by introducing myself. I'm Kenneth Venken a Computer
Science student from Belgium. (University of Hasselt) I've been willing
to join an opensource project for some time now. I'm interested in Ray
Tracing and I would like to contribute to this project. Perhaps add a
feature and write a Master Thesis about it. (or something like that)

Anyway, first things first, getting the source and compiling it.
This is how far i get:

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous <at> cvs.blender.org:/cvsroot/yafray login

Logging in to :pserver:anonymous <at> cvs.blender.org:2401/cvsroot/yafray
CVS password:

cvs [login aborted]: connect to cvs.blender.org(194.109.217.141):2401
failed: Connection timed out

Is the server down/busy? Or am i doing something wrong.

Removing flicking shadows noise of Yafray Animations (Simple way)

Hi!

I use a simple solution to remove the flicking blobs of yafray animations, I
guess that it maybe improve to yafray render engine. The temporal smoother
filter of virtual-dub program (www.virtualdub.org) can reduce only shadow
variations whithout remove details of objects and textures. Try it!

Anticipation for gcc 4.3: missing includes

Hi,

we've received a bugreport about missing includes in yafray, making the
build fail with gcc 4.3. A patch as well as detailed explanations are
available in the Debian BTS[1].

Compiling yafray, error in basictex.cc

 Hi there,

as I got very interested in the topic of photorealistic rendering and raytracing in a course at my
university, I want
to take a closer look on yafray. First step would be to compile the source, but I get problems with "line 262 in basictex.cc":

char *ext = strrchr(filename, '.');

I`m compiling it with visual studio 2005, and get the error:

cl : Command line warning D9035 : option 'Og' has been deprecated and will be re
moved in a future release
cl : Command line warning D9002 : ignoring unknown option '/Op'
basictex.cc
src\shaders\basictex.cc(262) : error C2440: 'initializing' : cannot convert from
'const char *' to 'char *'
        Conversion loses qualifiers
scons: *** [src\shaders\basictex.obj] Error 2
scons: building terminated because of errors.

As I look up a reference on strrchr, this error makes sense, because filename is a const char*:

at http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/clibrary/cstring/strrchr.html, strrchr is declared as following:

const char * strrchr ( const char * str, int character );
      char * strrchr (       char * str, int character );

I tried to add a const: "const char *ext = strrchr(filename, '.');" but then I get errors with the jpeg_librabry.

YafRay 0.0.9 available in Debian unstable + testing

Hi,

just to let you know, yafray 0.0.9 is available on both debian unstable
and debian testing (codenamed `etch'), as one can check by having a look
at: http://packages.debian.org/yafray and no bug has been reported so
far.

So, I guess that you can drop it from your Downloads section.

Oh, and that version includes OpenEXR support.

Cheers,
