Design principles

I'd like to point out a link that I recently saw posted on Slashdot that
really opened my eyes about how an efficient and useful HCI should act:

http://www.asktog.com/columns/022DesignedToGiveFitts.html

I wonder if applying these principles might eventually give Y-Windows a
competitive edge over Mac OS...

Re: Design principles

I think Fitts Law is a good thing. I also think however, that making
something fairly intuitive by default should take precedence over
reducing access time, with an option to change it later if
possible(which should be almost always IMO). Anyone else agree with me
on that?

That said, I would support a HIG which was high on Fitt's law. I think
that in any case, a HIG is needed before we reach 1.0 or we will end up
with messy UIs like GNOME 1.4 did(they did an amazing job of cleaning
it up, in their defense).

According to the roadmap 0.3 was scheduled for 2004-04-04. It should be
updated.

Yes. The main reason for that is that Mark's ISP flaked out.
Organising an open-source project and working on code is hard without a
reliable means of communication!

Does that mean he's back now? Or is he still having issues?

The traffic on this list has just about stopped. Is anyone doing
anything besides the various language binding guys? Even #y-windows is
dead!

Echo

Is anyone out there?

Has anyone heard from Mark? Did he loose interest or has he just been
busy with work?

I'd hate to see this project go down when it has so much potential. If
anyone is still producing work would you post to the list so others know
that the project is still kicking?

Lately, libYeiffel was released. Rawler and I are working on libYsharp.
There are bindings for perl, python, c, and c++. There is a project
calling itself "Y+" (yplus.org) that was started by the guy that was
working on the widget branch for Y. Asufield is working on the message
protocol (or was). There is/was a new drawing API in the works that Mark
was waiting on to continue work on a hardware accelerated canvas... this
is all I know or have heard.

I've also seen many new comers coming to #y-windows only to leave
because no one is talking. I have tried to let people know what is going
on to the best of my knowledge, but that is at best a small effort as
I'm not in the main loop (I'm just a mailing list and irc lurker who
happens to be building .net bindings for Y).

Re: Echo

I'll be expanding ywindows.white-walls.net shortly. I'll go ahead and ahead
yplus.org to the list. One thing that /I'd/ like to see are some extra
programs for Y, especially a control panel, no matter how weak. Proof of
concepts are always useful, especially if it shows Y loading and unloading a
module. Hell, I'd take a program that displays raw information about the Y
server using the current Y widgets.

Right now, it's the simple stuff that matters.

Oh, and I think we really ought to come up with some kind of leadership. Mark
is still with us, but he's admittedly quite busy with school and other such
normal life things. Y can't survive witha leadership vacuum.

Completly right. Leadership and project planning.
And open minds (to reuse things already done for example in fresco/berlin).

Re: Echo

I am graduating with my CS degree next week. I was planning on spending
time working on some of the missing pieces of Y, mainly widgets (i have
written some widgets for X before), but lately I have been wondering if
my time wouldn't be better spent on a different project. I would like
to see this project succeed, but there seems to be a lack of leadership
and it appears to be dying fast. If someone is willing to take up the
helm, they can count me in for some of the grunt work.

I would really like to see a release (.3?) done soon that integrates all
the work that has been done so far.
