Y-Windows code based will be merge with the FreeDesktop X Server environment!

The author of Y-Windows, Mark Thomas, officially announced on the IRC channel today that: "Y-Windows code based will be merge with the FreeDesktop X Server environment". "I've talked with Keith Packard yesterday on the channel and it seems just more convenient to merge our projects and to form a new XY protocol using XFree86 drivers." "Currently, both projects are using Cairo and therefore, the steps to create an SVG desktop based on Cairo is completely trivial." Resulting from that suggestion, Keith Packard wrote a thesis draft about the idea of using the XY protocol using Cairo, it's available here. Bandwidth is limited so please provide more mirrors! NVidia and ATI was contacted, they said they were glad that they won't have to provide new drivers for Linux and continue on releasing Binary XFree86 drivers. _________________________________________________________________ Free yourself from those irritating pop-up ads with MSn Premium. Notice the reply line, "On Thursday 01 April 2004", you could have at least
attempted to make it something believeable. Sorry to ruin your fun, but the
way this mailing list goes you probably won't see this email until the second
anyhow.

I will gladly host a copy on a mirror I have, however the link provided
doesn't seem to be working for me. If someone could send me a copy, I'd
greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

<bows head in disgrace>

I'm so gullable :p I really need to refrain from impulse reply emails

I should just burrow off into a corner and cut off all forms of contact on
April 1st to keep from the embarrassment :)

That or I could make myself a pin cussion and go around and help raise
people's self esteem falling for EVERY JOKE no matter how much it is
exaggerated.

Y mentionned in French magazine

Hi, just a bit of news; I recently purchased a copy of 'Login:', a
French magazine focusing on FOSS, because of an article series titled
'Must we abandon X Window ?', and sure enough, Y is mentionned, along
Xouvert, X.org, Freedesktop, DirectFB and Fresco :)

Nice to see we're not ignored :)

font problem

Hi,
I've installed Y-Windows 0.2 on Fedora Core 1 and everything is working
fine except the fonts. When I start for example the ycalculator, there
are no labels (or perhaps very small ones) on the buttons. I saw there
was a problem with the font selection which is solved by patch 22, but
no for me this patch has no effect.
i use freetype-2.1.3, gcc 3.3.2.
Any help on this is much appreciated!

You're playing with fire. Last time two projects made an April Fool's Day
joke like that, they went ahead and implemented it. Long live Parrot!

Re: font problem

hi reto

do you have installed the bitstream vera fonts? i'm not sure if they are
still in use...but i think you should give it a try (if you don't have
them already).
you can get them from:
ftp://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/mirror/fedora/linux/core/1/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/bitstream-vera-fonts-1.10-2.noarch.rpm
it's an official fedora core 1 package (you'll find it on your
installation discs too).

if this doesn't help, check your syslog for error-messages
(/var/log/messages) and post them to this list...

Unable to compile patch-33

Hi everyone,

I get the following error  after executing ./configure in the latest
version(patch-33):

./configure: line 23506: syntax error near unexpected token `LIBSIGC,'
./configure: line 23506: `PKG_CHECK_MODULES(LIBSIGC, sigc++-1.2 >= 1.2)'

"PKG_CHECK_MODULES" seems to be a macro that is not replaced. I did not manage
to find where this macro is defined.

I have installed the following build-tools under SuSE 9.0:
autoconf 2.59
automake 1.8.3
libtool 1.5.2
I have also installed the latest version of libsigc++:
libsigc++ 1.2.5

Any ideas?

Thanks

Andreas Karafyllis
