The author of Y-Windows, Mark Thomas,
officially announced on the IRC channel today that:
"Y-Windows code based will be merge
with the FreeDesktop X Server environment".
"I've talked with Keith Packard yesterday on the channel and it seems just more convenient to merge our projects
and to form a new XY protocol using XFree86 drivers."
"Currently, both projects are using Cairo
and therefore, the steps to create an SVG desktop based on Cairo is completely trivial."
Resulting from that suggestion, Keith Packard wrote a thesis draft about the idea of
using the XY protocol using Cairo, it's available here.
Bandwidth is limited so please provide more mirrors!
NVidia and ATI was contacted, they said they were glad that they won't have to provide
new drivers for Linux and continue on releasing Binary XFree86 drivers.
