Samsung SCX-4500W seems to work

Hello,

Using the xerox_mfp backend, scanning with the SCX-4500W MFP[1] seems to
work fine. Including scanning at 1200 dpi.

http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=printersmultifunction&type=printersmultifunction&subtype=monochromelasermultifunctionprintersfaxes&model_cd=SCX-4500W/XAA

For a temporary solution I added two lines
to /etc/sane.d/xerox_mfp.conf:
> # Samsung SCX-4500W
> usb 0x04e8 0x342b

Then made /etc/hal/fdi/information/19-libsane-scx4500w.fdi with
the following content:
> <?xml version="1.0"
> encoding="UTF-8"?>

I'm in the process of configuring sane on centos5.3.  I'm able to scan from
the command line as root and want to extend this capability to my other user
accounts.  I've read the information in the README.linux file and put my
users into the scanner group.  This doesn't appear to be sufficient.  I'm
now looking for the rules file referenced in the README.linux file:

"SANE comes with a udev rules file in the tools/udev
directory which may be used by distributions or can be copied to
/etc/udev/rules.d manually. The file format is explained on top of the file
itself. Either you need libusb 0.1.12 or newer or
USB_DEVFS_PATH=/dev/bus/usb
must be exported as a system-wide environment variable."

The source files for sane -1.0.20 do not have a tools/udev directory.  I
have also downloaded the source files for sane-1.0.19 which does have the
driectory, however it is empty.

Thus I turn to others who may know more of what is going on.  Are these
instructions out of date, or is the data missing?  What are my options?

Tom

did you try:

cd tools
make

allan

I had not tried that.  When I do, I am told "make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.  Stop."

Below are the contents of the tools directory in the 1.0.20 source distribution.  There doesn't seem to be a configure script.

that is because it is in the directory above- the makefile should be
made when you configure sane...

Choosing a scanner with complete support

Hello list!

I've just had a sad experience with the purchase of an Epson Perfection
4490. I missread the list of scanners and got the 4490 instead of the
4990 :-(

Well; because I'm using FreeBSD (7.2-RELEASE) the third party driver the
4490 required was not an option so eventually I sold the 4490 again.

I now need advise on how to choose a scanner with "complete" support. I
mainly need to scan simple documents and photoes.

The newer Epson models "only" has "good" support and I think I need the
scanner to have complete support.

Anyone who has good experience with a newer scanner that's still
availible, the 4990 is not, otherwise I would have bought one.

Thanks for any feedback.

/Leslie

I cannot recommend a particular model.
Nevertheless some general information which might hopefully help a bit:

Regarding Epson scanners which require a proprietary driver, see
http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-external.html#S-EPKOWA
and don't buy a model which "requires DFSG non-free" whatever stuff.

Find out which sane-backends version your FreeBSD (7.2-RELEASE) has.

Then go to
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-supported-devices.html
and there to "Old SANE Versions" to get a list of supported
models which work for your sane-backends version.

Unfortunately scanners which are listed there may be no longer
for sale and then the tricky part begins - i.e. you must somehow
(I don't know how) try to find out which currently buyable model
might also work with your sane-backends version...

Regarding "good" versus "complete" support, see the "Legend"
at those lists which read:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
"basic" means it works at least in the most important modes
but quality is not perfect.

"good" means the device is usable for day-to-day work.
Some rather exotic features may be missing.

"complete" means the backends supports everything the device can do.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

For the use-case which you described "good" should be "good enough".

It is even possible that a "good" supported scanner works
better than a "complete" supported scanner.

E.g.:

Assume an ACME Funscanner 300 can scan only up to 300 dpi
and has no additional features like an automated documet feeder (ADF)
and the SANE driver suppports scanning up to 300 dpi
then the ACME Funscanner 300 is a "complete" supported scanner.

Assume an ACME Funscanner 600 can scan up to 600 dpi
and has an ADF as additional feature
and the SANE driver suppports scanning up to 600 dpi
but the ADF is not supported
then the ACME Funscanner 600 is only a "good" supported scanner.

Assume an ACME Funscanner 1200 can scan up to 1200 dpi
and has an ADF as additional feature
and the SANE driver suppports scanning but only up to 600 dpi
and the ADF is also supported
then the ACME Funscanner 1200 is also only a "good" supported scanner.

Kind Regards

Fwd: avision: troubleshooting Lexmark X340 support on OSX

Nobody? Just the simple question: does a "pipe is stalled" error look like a libusb problem or avision/sane for an AVision OEM (Lexmark)?

Onderwerp: [sane-devel] avision: troubleshooting Lexmark X340 support on OSX

Hi all,

I have the latest SDK's for SANE installed on OSX (10.5.7, Intel). Added the USB-ID's for the Lexmark X340 (as a copy of the Avision MF3000 - AIO with ADF) to the Avision-backend, build, installed and tried to scan.

Somehow the USB-chip on the printer seems to stall when scanning. After it's stalled, only a power cycle from the printer seems to help.
Running scanimage -L repeatedly is not a problem (logging below). Sane-find-scanner is also not a problem.

Running a scanimage gives up with an "pipe is stalled" error. I never seem to get output files bigger than about 60800 bytes (or less if scan area is limited). Essentials of logging (all full logging also attached):

(...)
libusb/darwin.c ep_to_pipeRef: Converting ep address to pipeRef.
libusb/darwin.c usb_bulk_transfer: Transfering 15170 bytes of data on endpoint 0x82
USB error: libusb/darwin.c usb_bulk_transfer: unknown error
USB error: usb_bulk_read: An error occured during read (see messages above)
libusb/darwin.c ep_to_pipeRef: Converting ep address to pipeRef.
USB error: usb_clear_halt(ClearPipeStall): pipe is stalled
[avision] No data arrived.
(...)
libusb/darwin.c ep_to_pipeRef: Converting ep address to pipeRef.
libusb/darwin.c usb_bulk_transfer: Transfering 7266 bytes of data on endpoint 0x82
USB error: libusb/darwin.c usb_bulk_transfer: unknown error
USB error: usb_bulk_read: An error occured during read (see messages above)
libusb/darwin.c ep_to_pipeRef: Converting ep address to pipeRef.
USB error: usb_clear_halt(ClearPipeStall): pipe is stalled
[avision] No data arrived.
libusb/darwin.c ep_to_pipeRef: Converting ep address to pipeRef.

Is this an libusb error or avision driver problem?
Or is anything wrong or missing for the avision settings?
I recompiled the avision backend with AV_NO_64BYTE_ALIGN. Didn't change a thing.

Paul

Visioneer OneTouch 7100 USB

Hello,

I have a Visioneer OneTouch 7100 USB that I would like to work on
supporting via the genesys driver as suggested by the supported device
list. Can you please give me some pointers to help me get this scanner
into the driver for testing?

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a7 [Visioneer], product=0x0229 [USB
Scanner], chip=GL646) at libusb:003:004

Thanks,
Kris

	Hello,

the first step is to have working under windows and record -with usbsniff-
usb activity for each available resolution/color combinations for a small scan
area. The best is to have a separate usb log for each combination.
Then run decoding scripts against these, it will creates mode tables to add
to genesys_gl646.h.
You also have to create an entry describing your scanner model in
genesys_devices.c.
Then you'll have to test and fix bugs.

This is the outline. I'll provide any detail you need.

Regards,
	Stef
