Re: Friends of GNOME data

The new data is on the wiki. May was an awesome month!

Behdad is blogging about it this week.

I just realized that my Friends of GNOME update from last month never went through to the list.

So I put this month's update in the wiki and on the Foundation blog.

I created a Friends of GNOME wiki page to track tasks and goals:
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeMarketing/Tasks/FriendsOfGNOME

Here's the raw data from Friends of GNOME donations in a spreadsheet:
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeMarketing/Tasks/FriendsOfGNOME?action=AttachFile&do=view&target=donations-metrics.ods

I posted a couple of the graphs on the Foundation blog:

GNOME in the press

Hi,

whom would I contact when I found GNOME-related stuff in newspapers or
magazines? Surely we keep a list of articles somewhere, even for the
non-English stuff?

regards,
Michael

PS: Just in case this list *is* already the right place (all links in
Germany, sorry):
http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/tech/0,1518,626992,00.html
http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/tech/0,1518,627341,00.html
http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/tech/0,1518,627391,00.html

The person behind these articles is Bettina Lechner
( http://www.newhouse.at/ ), and she describes in detail how the GIMP
can be used for digital photo enhancement (several more publications on
her website it seems). Perhaps someone could make an e-mail interview
with such a professional GIMP user?

The only thing I found in the wiki is
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeFr/DansLaPresse for French articles.
If such a list was set up I wonder whether to exclude technical/computer
magazines - otherwise it would get crowded.
Dave tagged some articles about major releases at
http://delicious.com/tag/gnome224 (and /gnome222, ...).

Hi,

sure - make it "GOME in the *mainstream* press" then =p

The wiki is the best place for stuff like this. Pages tagged in
del.icio.us with "gnome press" also get syndicated to the GNOME News
feed. The "gnome" del.icio.us feed is also pretty interesting and
varied, but high volume.

The difficulty as always with the wiki is where to put the information
so that it is both useful for readers and easy to organise for editors.

I also like "articles in the press" including technical articles.
Cheers,
Dave.

I'd forgotten about that :)

Thanks Stormz (in Germany by any chance?)

I also did a rough back of the envelope unscientific estimate of how
many GNOME developers there are for someone a while back, which I shall
reproduce here for posterity:

On gnomefiles.org, there are:
  	 2139 applications
       1589411 downloads

On freshmeat.net, there used to be:

1026 GNOME applications:
http://freshmeat.net/browse/231/

1728 GTK+ applications:
http://freshmeat.net/browse/870/

(these links apparently don't work any more :( )

Debian popcon gives 2603 people who have libgtk-2.0-doc installed
Ubuntu popcon gives 9141 people with it installed.

(Updates for today: Debian gives 3055, Ubuntu gives 22635 people with
libgtk2.0-doc installed)

(It's a good bet that people installing the API documentation are at
least interested in developing with GTK+).

Cheers,
Dave.

Behdad - did you still want to blog the Friends of GNOME update?  I think Stormy mentioned she posted some data as well.

Thanks.
