ISTR reading that there's a libexec (or other) exe that's run to
determine whether the machine is capable of running gnome-shell, and that a
way of forcing the issue was to move that out of the way and replace it with
a symlink to /bin/true.

Or something like that, and this might be an out of date recommendation now!

shortcut supports

Good day.

In gnome2 (and gnome3 classic) it was (is?) possible to create shortcuts
to software with command line options. For example I've have a bunch of
links to different IP-TV playlists (passed as command line option to
VLC). How can I do same stuff with gnome3 shell?

Thanks.

Gnome 3 Removeable media settings.

Under system settings the "do nothing" for removable media is not
working. Case, I'm using an FC16 platform with Gnome 3, to program
usb/sd/cf devices. Once inserted they will pop up a the bottom of the
desktop asking to mount/eject the device. This behavior interferes with
operations to the devices being accessed and consequently blocks the
lower third of the desktop from being usable.
Is there a gconf tool setting to rip the guts out of the service that is
notifiying user space on change/insertion of media when its not suppose
to do anything per system settings. Or do I have to switch desktops?

Seems you found a bug. Please create a bugreport for this at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/. I guess gnome-shell handles media
insertions, or maybe gnome-settings-daemon. Choose one of those products
(developers will move it incase it is incorrect).

With Alacarte it is possible to create .desktop files. However, it
unfortunately needs a bit of work and currently is broken. There is a
bug for it, but nobody cared to help yet.

FW: Ubuntu 11.10 gnome3 glitch

Hello Everyone!

I have just installed ubuntu 11.10 on my machine, and I wanted to use gnome3 as my default interface, but I'm having a glitch problem since I have installed it. When I turn on the computer, it seems to work well, but after some time, I get a visual glitch that doesn't allow me to read any word that is written on the interface, altough, the programs still work out well.
Do you have any ideas on what could be triggering this strange problem? Should I contact the Xorg developers instead?
I've decided to start contacting you since I can't reproduce this problem in others graphical environments (even gnome classic).
I'm sending a screenshot from what I see here, and my computer/system specs are:

Motherboard: ASUS P5PKL-AM/BR
Processor: Intrel Core2Duo E7500 <at> 3.53Ghz
Memory: 4Gb DDR2 <at> 667 Mhz
Video Card: Nvidia ECS GTS 250 - using latest drivers downloaded from nvidia.com
System: Ubuntu 11.10 32 bits

Thanks in advance.

corrupt profile

I'm on Ubuntu 11.10 and GNOME, GNOME classic and GNOME classic (no
effects) are each "broken" for this user account, however the
GNOME/openbox option works fine.

What happens is that a panel tries to load, but appears caught in an
infinite loop. In any event, the desktop freezes and no commands work
(no terminal).

Can I "zap" the GNOME settings for this account? I just want to
recreated GNOME fallback. I'd rather avoid using apt, unless it's
called for. Incidentally, why does the GNOME/openbox version work? I
don't mind openbox, it's just a *tad* heavy for my system.

thanks,

Thufir

problems posting to list via gmane

Gmane says:

"Status posting allowed"

http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnome.general

however, it never works for me, Is GNOME blocking it?
