Simple way to debug gnome hang during startup?

Hello,

I'm trying to help someone with a Gnome startup issue, they've been having after an OS upgrade.  I've searched the gnome mailing list archives and haven't really found anything specific about how to go about debugging a situation where the login process hangs partway (as opposed to a crashing application where you can try to obtain a stacktrace ala here.)   Things I've suggested:
1.) Move/Remove .gnome* .gconf* .metacity*    [Made no difference]
2.) Check ~/.xsession-errors [Waiting for feedback]
3.) Check if there's firewall/net filtering software running [Waiting for feedback]

The login proceeds to displaying the desktop wallpaper apparently, but no further.  An altenative window manager (fluxbox) works fine, so it's ostensibly not video drivers or somesuch.

I'm wanting to know whether there's a fairly simple way to enable debugging/logging somewhere so as to be able to see how far the startup process gets/where the problem might be.

Many thanks for any suggestions, much appreciated!

Walter

sending apps to the right place in the menu

Hi,

I know it is possible to customize the menu in Gnome. But I am wondering if it is also possible to send applications to a specific place in the menu?

For example, I want to add an entry in the menu called 'multimedia players'. Is it possible to manage it so that apps like Rhythmbox, Listen etc. are placed in the new entry when they are installed?

I know I can place them in the entry after installing the app. But my question is about doing this automatically.

I hope I made this clear enough for you.

Thanks in advance,

\r

Just to make sure: You have added the Windows List applet to the panel?

Otherwise please try to do so:
- right-click on panel,
- "Add to Panel...",
- Choose "Windows List" in dialog,
- Click "Add".

Cheers,
Zoltan

I don't know the answer to this, but twelve hours is a REALLY short
time to repost or demand an answer.

Be patient - someone will respond eventually . . . or not.

See <http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/apc.html#adding-items

you're not familiar with it.)

gconf-editor

Do the keys in gconf-editor for Nautilus and the gnome-panels change between releases?

I am using Ubuntu 8.10... which used GNOME 2.24. I wrote a simple BASH script with a Zenity GUI that does some simple things.

It sets the keys that put the home folder, volumes, etc on your desktop. It works great on my computer, but other people are having things not work.

I wondered if it was becuase the keys have changed between 2.22 and 2.24?

Thanks for your time,

-Nick
