Default file/folder permissions in gnome

Hi all.

I need a way to change the default file/folder permissions on files
created by all users.

Is this handled by the same settings as would be used for CLI, or does
gnome have seperate place to configure this?

thanks,
kk

gnome changes

Throughout the last two gnome releases, I have noticed that less
applications use gnomeprintui and more use gtkprint. There is also the
gnome-vfs to gvfs/gio migration. I also noticed that less application
use libgnomeui.
I have a few questions.

Are there plans to move the rest of the applications such as gnome-games
and gnome-utils from gnomeprintui to gtkprint?

What about gnomecanvas? Can applications be ported to directly use cairo
instead? Is that possible? Does this require changes to gtk+ can this be
application specific?

The general push is to kill off libgnome, libgnoeui,
libgnomecanvas, libgnomeprint, and libgnomeprintui.
It's not an instant process. See:

http://live.gnome.org/ProjectRidley

As for the canvas, there have been a lot of recent
discussions about how best to implement a new canvas
inside GTK+. See, for example, Havoc's post:

Color settings

I noticed that in 2.20.0 the display colors of various parts of
windows can be controlled that are/can not in 2.16.0.

Can anyone tell me where the color controls for the panels in the
windows are set? (I'm guessing that they're in a file somewhere....)
I really hate the gray on my CentOS 5.1 box and really like the color
controls in 2.20.0 (on my work FC8 box).

In the alternative, is there a way to get 2.20.0 for a distro that
does not include it (other than the "demo" CD - not an acceptable
method)?

Thanks.

Why don't you get 2.22? :-)
However, you can build it from sources using GARNOME
http://www.gnome.org/projects/garnome/ or jhbuild
http://live.gnome.org/Jhbuild , and it should work without problems on
your distribution.

Customizing Gnome on Macosx

I recently installed Gnome 2.14.0 via fink under Mac OSX (Tiger). I've
used gnome for many years under various Linux distros. My .xinitrc looks
like this:

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

# merge in defaults and keymaps

if [ -f "$sysresources" ]; then
    xrdb -merge "$sysresources"

if [ -f "$sysmodmap" ]; then

if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then

Re: Customizing Gnome on Macosx

I went back and checked I have all the Gnome components installed..looks
like I do..

My feeling is that there's something I need to change in Gconf-editor to
make the gnome-menu items appear and see programs in the applications
menu, but I can't find it..

Any ideas ?

Thanks,
Iain

Changing Panel Names for Gnome Menu Launcher ??

Hi;

I would like to change the names for the menu launcher that comes
pre-set on my upper panel. Currently I have "Applications Places
System". This launcher takes up 2.5" on my upper panel. I would like
to change the headings to "Apps Places Sys". That would probably give
me 1/2 to 3/4 inches of extra panel space.

Is there anyway I can safely do this without destroying any functions of
the menu? Is there a way to add menu headings to my gconf-editor so
that the headings can be controlled from there?

Actually, you can't do that via gconf, since the names
Applications/Places/System are hard-coded into source-code (you can
browse the sources of gnome-panel, and I guess the names are in a file
like menu-bar.c or something similar).
But I suggest you a dirty hack that should do the trick (but I haven't
tried it):
If you modify your gnome localization files, and change "Applications"
with "Apps", I suppose it should solve your problem (i.e. see
http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-panel/trunk/po/en_GB.po?revision=10917&view=markup
and search for Applications/Places/System).
