Have a question

Hi all.
Can I download precompiled gnome 2.18 packages for debian?
(something like apt-get install gnome-2.18, etc)
Thanks in advance.

Some 2.18 packages are already available in experimental if you don't
want to wait for them to be included in etch (we're still waiting for
2.16, aren't we?), and if you want to risk to see something broken in
your system.

Simply add to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ experimental main contrib non-free

or whatever works for you.

Cheers

Actually, 2.18 is being uploaded to unstable, you can follow progress
here[0]. As for backports, Norbert Tretkowski has a backport for
2.16[1], and I think he's planning to backport 2.18 also.

1. http://www.inittab.de/blog/backports/20070318_gnome2.16-backport.html

... still plenty of GNOME lovin' in Debian :)

So, what should I do in the next step? Which differences should I see here?
I use synaptic, and nothing newest here is not appeared :(
(I do reload, etc, but versions still old and no new)

Sorry, I tried it myself, you have to also add:

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free

(or maybe it's a better idea to keep only this line and delete the
experimental repository?) then update the repository index with:
sudo apt-get update

or in synaptic with reload. Then you should see many gnome 2.18
packages, ready to be installed (and maybe broke your system ;-), so
be careful).

HTH, cheers

Starting gnome after text-based install

I have just dropped Centos 5 on a laptop with only 256M memory.
Problem was 24M is shared with the video card so the installer insisted
on text, not graphical install.

I DID install gnome and specified it as my interface. But when I do an
init 5, I come up in X not Gnome.

What do I have to change to fix this aberrant behaviour?

Oh, for those not familiar with Centos 5, it is basically RedHat
Enterprise 5 which is based on FC6. Or so I am told anyway!

Edit /etc/inittab file to reflect as shown below

id:5:initdefault:
   ^
This number should be 5.

There is a missing piece (one of many!) in the text install.

Even if you select Gnome as your workstation WIndows environment, not
all of Gnome gets in. You still have to do:

yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"

Then edit inittab.
