Application windows disappear when others are shown or closed

I'm using SuSE 10.1, which comes with GNome 2.12.2. The machine is an
Intel x86-64, ATI x300.

I have a strange problem where application windows disappear from
without a trace while the process remains running. The problem affects a
wide range of applications: nautilus, terminal, firefox, java apps,
eclipse, etc.

The problem is very unpredictable, but it usually happens when one app
shows a dialog, closes a dialog, or when a window is closed. These
events suddenly kill the parent window of the same application and often
kill other application windows too! Sometimes this includes the
gnome-panel disappearing, and also all desktop icons.

When I open the GNOME system monitor, I can see that the disappeared
window processes are still running, but I can't find a way to resurrect
their windows back to bring them to the front. However, if the window
that disappeared is something like firefox or gedit, then these can get
resurrected when I hit a link (to open a new tab in firefox) or open a
new text document because as you know, these actions reuse the same
running instance so it merely brings the current process window to the
front; this tells me that the app process is still running fine, but
it's just that its window is gone for some reason! The disappeared
windows are not listed in neither window selector or window panel.

When I log off, I sometimes notice the disappeared windows flashing back
quickly - but I'm not sure about this.

My questions is:
1) on the short term, as a workaround, is there some signal or a way to

Re: Very big project!

Sure there are people up to it, although i'm not quite a seasoned
developer(rather a hobby coder.)

What's missing is someone to write out exactly what the program should
include and how it is supposed to work(yeah we clould all download
crocodile software, but are we copying or creating new stuff?)

So since you're the one with the hours in front of a chemistry lab(i
hate chemistry) if you were to write out some moderately detailed
specifications/features i am sure someone will develop it.

I think you should file a bug for Totem, you can do it in the following

This doesn't with movies. Totem will start and crash with an error message. I can get it to play movies with this routine: 1) Insert the movie DVD and wait for Totem to start and quit with the message: "Cannot Mount Volume. You are not privileged to mount the volume 'MovieName'" 2) Run "mount /dvd" in a terminal. Totem will start and stop, but not quit, with the message: "Totem was not able to play this disc. No reason." Accept this message. 3) Bring down the Movie menu and click "Play Disk...". Totem then plays the movie fine. I can live with this, but something is wrong. Any ideas? wmctrl might be able to do what you want.

Mounted partitions appear on my desktop

Hello,

I've just bought a new hard drive, created two partitions on it, and
mounted them as root via sudo. It suddenly appeared on my "normal"
user's desktop. I said, nevermind, they will disappear after reboot. But
they didn't. How can I make them disappear?
The fstab entries for them:

/dev/hdb1 /home/store ext3 defaults 0 2
/dev/hdb5 /home/store2 ext3 defaults 0 2
