What is wrong with my gnome? (Fedora Core 3)

Hi everyone,
My gnome is 2.8.0, the original version with Fedora Core 3 CDs. I met with a long long delay when I logged out from gnome (a few minutes!), under runlevel 3. Sometimes it even didn't work. And I got WARNINGs as the system switched back to console. I used
$startx >& gnome_cerr_status_users2.log
to log this. Here comes the log file.

xscreensaver and xautolock

Hello,

so far I've used xautolock/xlock as screensaver and autologout
means.
Now I wanted to replace xlock by xscreensaver. So I ran xautolock
and xscreensaver concurrently. But now autologout of xautolock
doesn't work anymore.
Is it possible to configure xautolock and xscreensaver and still
have autologout working?

using mouse button to switch window or desktop

Hi,

I have an USB mouse with 5 buttons.
In fine, I have two buttons not used.
I would like to use _one_ to switch desktop, and _one_ to switch window.
I use GNOME 2.10, on Fedora Core 4 (and dont want to recomile gnome from
tarball :-))
I for the moment use the built-in touch combination:

- Alt-TAB to switch window
- Ctrl-Alt-{Left|Up|...}Arrow to switch desktop.

Using the desktop shortcuts wizard does not consider the mouse buttons.
Should I use XBindKeys, but then, how?

How to upgrade to a newer version of GNOME?

Hi,
I am new to GNOME. I have an old version of GNOME with my red hat distribution.
Can you please tell me how to upgrade it to the latest version of GNOME?
Where can I find instructions?

Thank you.

First, what do you mean with "old version"?Tell us exactly what version
do you have.
Second..Red Hat or Fedora Core?
Third...the oldest free RH versions or RHEL?
Fourth...If RHEL - go to Red Hat, Inc fo support. If Fedora, or the old
RH versions...wich version?!
Thank you.

Re: How to upgrade to a newer version of GNOME?

IMHO. If your going to have to install another version then I would consider UBUNTU.
It's based on Debian so you will have to reformat  your drive but in the long run I think its a better choice.

http://www.ubuntulinux.com
You can download the live cd iso and burn it to a disk. The live cd will let  you test drive it without having
to install it.

Just my opinion.

Re: what dotfile

You may also want to grab .gonf
If the permission are not write then you can login as root.
Then type chown username:username -R /home/username

That may give  you additional settings.

Hi, I have one notebook on which I setup my favorite preferences (shortcuts, panels disposition/layout/behaviour, workspace names/number...) I tried to overwrite .gnome, .gnome2, .gnome2_private, but I did not have the workspace name nor the panels layout nor the application launchers layout on the panel... I guess I overwrote the wrong "dot-thing". What is the right one? Thank you.

I would hardly suggest to someone who is trying to upgrade gnome to
change distros. There is a level of expertise expected in making such a
change. Depending on how old a release of Red Hat it is, there are
various solutions. Maybe Samuel can tell us what release of Red Hat
he's on. If it's too old, it's not an easy thing to upgrade just Gnome.

Re: How to upgrade to a newer version of GNOME?

Thanks for all your help.
Now I install fedora 4 to my machine. Can you please tell me how can I install gnome 2.12 on top of fedora 4? I think fedora 4 only comes with 2.10.

Yes, I did try the live cd demo. But I want to use gnome 2.12 for real. how can I do that?

Thank you.

gnome-volume-control: Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found

hi,
using gnome-2.8,
sound system used to work fine,
but since experienced a hard disk bad blocks problem,
gnome-volume-control cannot start again,
always popup a dialog says:
"Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found"

doing
 `cp sound.wav /dev/dsp`
 still cause noise heard as before;

some application can play sound, but cannot play & record at the same time

`cd /dev; ./MAKEDEV audio` just has no effect.

what could be the problem ?
