Some suggestions for GCM from Jeff Waugh

Hey everyone,

Earlier this month I asked Jeff "jdub" Waugh (who attends the same LUG
as I do -- Sydney) to take a quick look at GCM and make
recommendations. If the name seems familiar, jdub is the GNOME release
manager and author of GARNOME. Jeff is also especially a strong
advocate of the "It should just work(TM)" movement within GNOME
circles. Attached below is an excerpt of that IRC chat I had with him
about GCM in relation to HIG.

Cheers,
Andrew "Netsnipe" Lau

Yeah, yikes, I thought you were going to send a summary, not the log. :-)

^ note that you guys could really drive this if you propose the Mono-based
version of gcm for the next release. :-)

Yes, well, I have read the log and I agree with most issues. I just
don't have the time to fix all them in a short period. Perhaps it would
be better if gcm would use glade for it's userinterface in stead of
hardcoded C.

The .NET version of gcm is far from finished. In fact I am still waiting
for two other programmers to finish their exams and stuff they are doing
now before I even think about committing the module in CVS

Jul 03 15:38:53 <jdub> as in, getting it into the desktop release? it
needs to be proposed for 2.6 when there's a request from proposals
Jul 03 15:39:12 <Netsnipe> no one proposed gcm? = )
Jul 03 15:39:19 <Netsnipe> I thought some people just hated it
Jul 03 15:39:39 <Netsnipe> it just seems weird that the clipboard
in GNOME is still neglected
Jul 03 15:39:50 <jdub> no one proposed it for 2.4

Thats wierd, I once proposed it for 2.4, but that was some time ago. I
got some comments from people on the mailinglist that obviously never
used gcm before and did not saw the use of it, and then suddenly I was
to busy to focus myself on the gcm-project. (I was switching jobs). I
remember that I even create a garball-thingy for gcm of which you
explained me how to build it (or there must be two jdubs on
irc.gimp.org). However, doesn't matter. I agree if you say that gcm is
not ready for inclusion in GNOME Desktop... so it should not be included
at all.

Jul 03 15:40:05 <jdub> bob2: 2.4 is feature and module frozen
Jul 03 15:40:30 <jdub> Netsnipe: the extended clipboard, yes.
copy/paste works as expected.
Jul 03 15:40:31 <gus> Netsnipe: the clipboard in gnome (mostly) works
fine afaict

Please note that the primary purpose of gcm is not to fix a clipboard
but to add features to the clipboard like saving the clipboard data

Heh, that makes a lot of sense. ;-)

A desktop framework/daemon

Hi there,

I am the author of the current GNOME Clipboard Manager application.
Being aware that only a clipboard manager is not what people actually
really need, I am planning to create a new type of daemon.

My plans are to create a desktop-daemon that serves all types of desktop
services. My plans are to make this desktop-daemon platform independent
and network transparant.

The first module that I am planning to create is a clipboard-daemon.
This clipboard daemon will keep a small history of clipboards and will
talk XML with it's clients;

Applications (on the network and/or the localhost) can then ask the
daemon to get a layer of a clipboard in the history (A clipboard can
have different layers, or targets. For example the HTML view of such a
clipboard, or the TEXT view, the PNG view or whatever format the
application desires). Because such clipboards can be binary the content
will be or UUEncoded or served as a HTTP url

'example' :

<clipboardlayer>
<mimetype>image/png</mimetype>
<sourcetype>url</sourcetype>
<url>http://computername:pppp/clipboardmanager/binitem?clipboard=current/image.png</url>
</clipboardlayer>

gcm-development

Hi!

I've allways wanted to contribute to Gnome but since I'm relativly new at using some kind of UNIX and I've
mostly programmed in a windows enviroment (though I'm learning C at the moment) so it's been hard to find an
area where I could contribute. Now when i saw that C# coders were wanted (an area where I actually have some
experience) I thought it could be a good way for me to start and give my help to Gnome.

So what I'm asking is, would it be possible for a persone like me to join this project? Oh, and btw, I'm running
FreeBSD but it looks like mono will be available for us as well any day now :)
