Problems installing Gnome on OS X

Anyone know a good place to go for instructions on installing Gnome on
OS X? I am having some trouble and would like some help.

I keep getting an error telling me that Gnome:

"Failed to execute gnome-settings-daemon: 2(No such file or directory)"

Any idea what that means? Any help would be appreciated.

Perceived Software Quality Survey (PESQUS) for GNOME

Dear GNOME Users and Developers:

We are conducting empirical research on the quality and interface aspects of
various open-source and proprietary software. Therefore, we are investigating
the quality of the GNOME desktop software as perceived by its users. For this
purpose, we have created a short survey. We would highly appreciate it if
you could follow the link below and fill out this survey:

The developers who use GNOME during their daily computer operations can
respond too.

Many thanks for your help.

Howto start Gnome with X11 / Mac OS X 10.3?

Hi,

let me introduce myself first: I'm new to this list and after some
playing around with Gentoo, I thought it might be quit good to try
Gnome direct under X11. I'm living in Berlin / Germany.

Question:
How can I start Gnome after installing it using fink bundle-gnome.

gnome-session results in starting X, but it will quit after a few
seconds (I don't know what I should put in .xinitrc for Gnome.

Using KDE with .xinitrc
	source /sw/bin/init.sh
	/sw/bin/startkde >/tmp/kde.log 2>&1
works without a problem.

So it's not a X but a Gnome-Config-Problem.

Any ideas?

regards from Berlin - getting cold here.

Installer can't find libgnomeprint (Mac OS X)

I have successfully installed libgnomeprint2.2 version 2.4.2-5 with Fink on my Mac OS 10.3.5.

But when i try and run the configure script to install my application (linsmith- not available from Fink),
i get the following error:
checking for libgnomeprint-2.2 >= 2.2... Package libgnomeprint-2.2 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libgnomeprint-2.2.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'libgnomeprint-2.2' found

configure: error: Library requirements (libgnomeprint-2.2 >= 2.2) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.

I tried using the gnome-print pkg-config utility, as described in the documentation to describe the path.  It seems to me, from the above error message, that there should be a file called libgnomeprint-2.2.pc, but there is not anywhere on my system.  So i don't know quite where to direct the path.  I tried many variations of paths pointing to libgnomeprint components; the commands were accepted, but my configure script still could not find the lib.

Oh, i also know that Fink puts things in unconventional places, so i also used
CFLAGS=-L/sw/include LDFLAGS=-L/sw/lib
in my configure command.

Is there any hope?
thanks, don

Subject: Where does libgnomeprint-2.4.2 go?

I'm trying to install a platform-independent X-windows App whose configure script needs the subject lib, but can't find it.  I found the libgnomeprint-2.4.2.tar.bz2 in sw/src and unpacked it, but IT needs to be installed too.

Where should i put this folder before i run its configure script?
Where should i put the Applications folder when i run its configure script?
(I assume that i got the libgnomeprint-2.4.2.tar.bz2 and all the other gnome stuff i have from a Fink installation.)
I'm running OS 10.3.5 with developer tools.
I'm pretty ignorant of all this Unix stuff and would appreciate any advice.
TIA, don

(no subject)

I am pretty new to X11, Unix, Linux, and Gnome. I've been a Mac person
for about 20 years now but only dabbled in Unix lately. I want to get
Gnome running on my Mac (I have X11 installed but not XFree86). What
are my first steps to getting this running?

Default HTML Helper App?

(I apologize for cross-posting)

Greetings,

I am trying to get the Gnome Help working here on Mac OS X with GNOME
2.6, and I cannot find where I may specify to use by default, my
wrapper for launching HTML.
Is there a configuration file that specifies what browser to use?

Any hints, help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Default GNOME Printer?

(I apologize for cross-posting)

Hello,

I am trying to figure out how to set the "Generic Postscript" printer
as the default (not CUPS) here with GNOME 2.6; I have been looking at
modifying libgnomeprint, but I thought there maybe a better way. I have
built Gnome "printman" 0.0.2 but it just draws a blank GUI.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Starting Gnome

I am new to the X11 windowing system having all of my experience with
command line interface AIX and Solaris systems. I have installed Gnome
on my system, but i need to know how to start it. There is no easy to
figure out "startkde" type of comand in the bin directory where the
rest of gnome is. What do I enter at the command line or into the
.xinitrc file to start gnome?

Thanks,

Halley Clark
