You are making it hard to reply to your questions if you don't specify the exact
version of GNU Midnight Commander. Even if you mentioned it before, other
subscribers are not supposed to check the archives and do the research for you.

Also, there is not enough information about the symlinks. Every symlink has a
target, which can be absolute or relative. It would be helpful if you provided
the exact targets of the symlinks.

Some symlink problems were fixed in version 4.6.1-pre1. There are known symlink
problems in 4.6.0 and older versions. Please upgrage if you didn't upgrade
yet.

emacs -nw as external editor

I wanted to use emacs as mc's external editor. But I prefer having the
non-X interface that is invoked with "-nw".

I have managed to change my EDITOR to "/usr/bin/emacs -nw", since `echo
${EDITOR}` gives me "/usr/bin/emacs -nw".

When i started mc, and tried to invoke the editor with [F4], emacs is
not executed. mc appeared to try to execute it (similar effect achieved
when pressing C-o), and the cursor goes to top-left of the terminal
(0,0), but it immediately returns to mc's panels.

Note that without the -nw switch, mc was able to invoke emacs. So I
guess the -nw switch breaks things... :p

Any suggestions?

Thanx in advance,

-Eddy

mc 4.6.1-pre1 mcserv

hi pavel,

in 4.6.1-pre1, mcserv won't work (slack 9.1, 2.4.23) - it doesn't
accept passwords anymore (always 'invalid').

slackware is using shadow passwords.

i think the vfs changelog entry of 2003-10-25:

    * mcserv.c: Don't use HAVE_CRYPT from extraconf.h.

might be related somehow?

and: thank you for maintaining and developing mc, the most useful tool
on my machines!

as a workaround you could call a bash script in $EDITOR to envoke emacs
with -nw.
That works for me.

Works for me, too! Thanx!

This works when I keyed it in mc's command line. It doesn't work as an
environment variable, though...

I followed Heiko Gerdau's suggestion by setting my EDITOR to a shell
script that invokes emacs.

Thanx anyway,

Midnight Commander and ftp.isc.org

For some reason I get all files and directories listed twice.

Using CVS from October 30.

I can't reproduce it with LFTP, NFTP, and Lynx.

include scp?

hi list,

mc is a favorite file browser and ftp client, also in times of X-gui
driven software.
I have a feature request: is it planned to include an scp/sftp client
I into mc? this would be a very helpful tool, coz there are no good guis
for scp on linux at all.. :)

regards,

sftp support is often requested, but I'm not aware of any efforts or
plans to implement it.

As for scp, it doesn't transfer directory listings, so it's probably not
useful for implementing VFS on top of it. Mixing ssh and scp would only
make matters more complicated (e.g. separate authentication). If the ssh
utility is to be used anyway, then fish should be adequate for most tasks.

Slow startup as user on console

Hallo,

I have problem with mc 4.6.0 :
GNU Midnight Commander 4.6.0
Virtual File System: tarfs, extfs, cpiofs, ftpfs, fish, smbfs
With builtin Editor
Using system-installed S-Lang library with terminfo database
With subshell support as default
With support for background operations
With mouse support on xterm and Linux console
With support for X11 events
With internationalization support

When I start it from xterm or on console as root, it startup
immediatly, but when I started it as user from console I must wait about
5sec. I have found in mail-list archive some similar problem connected
with oafd (??), but this server run in both cases.

Do you have some suggestion?

Thanks.
