Unless things have changed in a newer version that I have not yet
installed, this is an old feature. Use Alt-i to make the other panel to
show the same directory, and you can also use Alt-o to make the other
panel go to the parent directory of the current one.

BTW, these two items are well documented.

If you configure MC for 'Lynx-like Motion', the left arrow key will take you
back to the parent directory.

Listing mode "bsize" and "Show Directory Sizes"

Hello all,
here's a suggestion: I prefer "bsize" to "size" in my panels, because
directory size means nothing to me.

However, when I press Ctrl-Space on a directory, to calculate the size
of the whole tree that lies under there, I'd still like to have the
size displayed. Currently using "bsize" makes it impossible to use
"Show Directory Sizes".

I'm testing in MC 4.8.3.

go to parent directory with backspace

Hi,

In Total Commander there is a very handy feature: with backspace you
can quickly jump to the parent directory. It'd be nice if this feature
were added to MC too. If the bottom command line is empty and
backspace is pressed, it could be interpreted this way.

Or is there another shortcut for going back to parent? Pressing Home +
Enter is 2 keys :)

Thanks,

Laszlo

show current directory in the right panel

Hi,

I upgraded my mc from source to 4.8.1.3 and it behaves a bit
differently. When I open mc from a directory, this current directory
is shown in the left panel. Since previous versions opened the current
folder on the right side, it feels awkward now. I always focus on the
right side :)

How can I change this behaviour?

Thanks,

Laszlo

The main reason I don't use mc -d is that I don't remember to do it.
Being able to redefine what "mc" does would help. Then for the once a
week or so when I actually want the mouse to do something I'd have to
remember the alias (or type alias and pick from the list).

I use x mostly because it lets me have 6 or 9 rxvt windows open and
viewable at once, and I use the mouse to select which one I want to
work in.

And I use FVWM. which doesn't try to run my life, like KDE or Gnome.
So what if I have to manually add things to a menu by editing my
fvwmrc file? I like being able to click any available spot in the
root window and have a menu pop up.

Also I use tcsh, not bash. Not sure why exactly, maybe I just like
setenv, but redirecting stderr and stdout is another thing I have to
look up everytime, so that's what man pages are for, And I usually
boot into OpenBSD, not Linux.

But mc, couldn't live without it. I used Total Commander in Windows,
Norton Commander in DOS.

FTP cd problems

I have recently updated to version 4.8.1.3 on max OSX using macports
and ftp no longer works properly. Connections seem to work but
changing directories often fails, and am having all kinds of
erratic behavior. I have seen this on more than one server. In one
case I had a system adminstrator on the phone with me and he was
seeing all kinds of weird things, like the wrong user or user ID
being submitted.

Is anyone else seeing problems like this?

I am deeply troubled. MC has been exclusively and reliably been my
FTP client for over 10 years and it is now pretty much useless for
such.

Simple mc.ext/bindings extension isn't working...

I'm using mc 4.8.1 (Debian wheezy) and 4.7.0.6 (Debian squeeze), and I
can't seem to get the following to launch in mc:

# xoj
regex/\.xoj$
 Open=xournal %f &
 View=xournal %f &

In squeeze, when I hit ENTER the mc window just blinks, but doesn't
launch Xournal. In wheezy, when I hit ENTER it opens the .xoj file in
more, which again, isn't launching it in Xournal. I've made sure to
save mc.ext or bindings, exited and restarted mc, and my results don't
change.

I created another extension, and it seems to be OK:

# kdb
regex/\.kdb$
 Open=keepassx %f &
 View=keepassx %f &

And it seems to work OK. I can use the shell within mc ("xournal %f",
and it does the right thing), so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

If _MOST_ of the time your only clicking to restore focus, and you would
consider disabling mouse support in a configuration file, have you tried
setting an alias in your ~/.bashrc {or equivalent} file???

Mine says:

alias mc="mc -d"

Now I don't need to remember to type the -d part. And for those rare
occasions when I actually do want enable the mouse support, my .bashrc also
says:

alias mcm=/usr/bin/mc

Works for me...

Hi Alan. Why click to bring a window into focus? I'm running
the XFCE4 desktop on Centos Linux 5.7, and I have the
desktop set so that the window focus follows the mouse
pointer. That means as soon as I place my mouse pointer on a
window, that automatically brings that window into focus -
without me having to click.

Not sure what OS you are running though?

Kind Regards,

Keith Roberts
