Fwd: gqview development support

Hi ,

First of all, sorry for my English: I'm studying to improve it, really.
My name's Oscar Miras, and I'm a student working on my final project degree; at the Informatics Barcelona's School.
Me and my tutor are deciding in wich project we are going to work on. We're checking mainly two programs: Gqview and Thunar.
We want to add a new feature to make navigation between files more intuitive . For instants, one example is to group by date all the pics shown on the navigation windows of Thunar, in a similar way that Fotolog does: showing it as calendar format , emphasing on the dates where the major amount of pics were created. The reason is that when gqview ( and more others image viewver programs ) have a large amount of pics, it's quite difficult to find the exact picture you are trying to find. Moreover, people do not usually change the default name of a picture when they make one with their camera. may color the days of the calendar where more photos of concentration has occurred.
We're thinking also about using other meta-data information that multimedia files can give us, so maybe we colud use the camera time and date to sort the photos. There are just two exemples, the project just started ;).

The main question is: if we finally decided to add this feature to gwview, will we have any help? I saw that project activity is very low, and last version is on December 2006 ( my tutor says that because gqview is a very stable program ;) ).
Second question: would you consider to add this new "navigation file phiolophy" on your porject? (it's possible to add it as a 'switch option') ?

Thank you for you time!
Óscar.

Diplay pixel coordinates, and rgb-data / pixel coordinates for editor

I missed a feature in gqview, so I implemented it today. It is an
optional status-bar add-on showing the pixel-coordinates of the mouse
and the rgb-values of this pixel. I also added %x and %y as
editor-macros working together with %p to use the pixel values for a
call to a script. Furthermore I added a checkbox in the view-menu to
turn off the feature as it may be disturbing to see the permanently
changing values if you do not need them.

Referring to former feature requests I think maybe someone might want
to use it:

https://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_name=40F9E2BE.9080606%40techspecs.com

It was my first try adding _senseful_ ;) features to an open source
project, so any advices are appreciated. Unfortunately I did not
recogise that gqview is outdated, so I learned my first lesson. Anyway
... the attached patch applies to GQView 2.1.5 src-dir, diffed against
the svn-tag in the geeqie-repository of that version.

Greetings, Ruben

customised shortcuts don't work in fullscreen-mode

I customised the .gqview/accels file having lines
(gtk_accel_path "<Actions>/MenuActions/RotateCCW" "l")
(gtk_accel_path "<Actions>/MenuActions/RotateCW" "r")
now.
But in fullscreen-mode
r
still works as refresh and
l
doesn't anything.

Any hints?

Thank you.

Geeqie: a fork of GQview

Hi all,

We (Vladimir Nadvornik and Petr Ostadal) have created a GQview fork named
Geeqie. It's homepage is http://geeqie.sourceforge.net. We want to improve
features useful for handling digital photos.

Here is a list of already implemented new features:
http://geeqie.wiki.sourceforge.net/new_features

Feel free to join the mailinglist and check out the source or binary packages.
Any feedback is welcome.

Now we want to integrate the existing patches. It would be helpful if you
could sent the patches to our mailinglist.

Re: Gqview-devel fork name

IMHO, the name should remain if possible. But if it *needs* to change, here is an idea: g2view

Agreed

Fork

Hi,

Creating a fork of gqview is somewhat blocked because we are not sure
that "GQViewE" is optimal name. In fact it was a very first idea that we had
when we were creating the svn repository :)
However we were not able to find a better name yet. So I would like to ask
here. Does anybody have any idea?

BTW, there is some progress in the svn. I have added a possibility to
use exiv2 library and display almost all metadata.

How does translation / localisation of GQView work?

G'day everyone

I lead a volunteer translation project to translate opensource software
into various languages, and it looks like GQView is a program that we
should help to translate. Can you please tell me what the process is of
translating GQView?

I see GQView uses PO files. Where can I get the POT file? Is the POT
file generated by the GQView team, or must translators generate it
themselves?

Does GQView have a formal translation process? I mean, is there a
single translator or translation team that is regarded as the translator
for that language, or can anyone just update the translation of any
language at any time?

I look forward to your responses.

Sincerely
Samuel Murray

GQViewE: LIRC support?

Some time ago I wrote a patch to add LIRC support (see www.lirc.org) to
gqview. It allows you to use a remote control to browse your photos,
zoom in/out and so on. It is expecially useful in fullscreen mode for
presentations or just to show your friends your holidays photo. Maybe
it could become one of the enhancements of GQViewE?
If anyone is interested the patch can be found here:
http://www.tautologica.org/beniamino/gqview-lirc.html

jpeg size limit

Hi,

Like Photoshop, gqview can't display jpeg images larger than 30'000 pixels.
Gimp correctly display them. Do you think it is possible to add support
for such large images?

Thanks,

gqview-devel status

Gqview

With the addition of 2 features, Gqview will enable me to stop using
VMWare, Windows and Thumbs Plus.
To be finally rid of the last windows application is very important to me.

The first feature is a display of the jpg quality.
File size alone is not enough. A 75 quality file can easily have extra
data in it and appear larger than a file of 85 or higher quality.
There are also the cases where I have images that were 50-75 compression
quality, but someone saved them at 99.
Only if I know the real jpg quality can I effectively sort though my
collections.

Visual comparison:
If I right click a thumbnail and scroll down, I can open the image in a
new window.
With 2 or more images open, I can switch between them on the task bar
and easily see the differences.
However, when doing this with hundreds or thousands of images, it lacks
usability.
If the “open in new window” was at the top of the dialog box AND a
double left click on the thumbnail would open in a new window, I would
have the usability that I need.

A third but not required (right now) feature is to store the meta data
and the thumbnails in a database.
This is the standard procedure for professional applications and with
good reasons.
We have Sqlite, Postgres and MySql available. Showimg already has this
implemented so, code to see how it is done is available.

There is of course a long list of other usability items before Gqview
would be close to a
commercial application like Thumbs Plus, but the first two features
above would make it usable.
Right now, it is not.

However, before I make such changes to my copy of Gqview, I would really
like to know the status of the project.

From the home page I see that nothing has happened since December 2006.
On the mailing list archive, I see that code has been submitted, but no
where do I see where that has been rolled in.
Perhaps worse is this note in the CVS:
##### Note: GQview CVS on sourceforge is not always up to date, please
use #####
##### an offical release when making enhancements and translation
updates. #####
If this is true, how is there any coordination of the code changes that
the developer is working on (if any) and those of others?
Next, I see that there is a fork in the project with all the code
changes over at
http://svn.opensuse.org/viewcvs/GQViewE/trunk/

If the source forge page is correct, there are 38 open bugs. But with no
coordination, I have no idea who's code (if any) is working on these bugs.
There are also 115 open feature requests (not including mine)

Before I make any changes or additions to the code, I would like to know
the status of the project.
I would also like to know if there is something I can do to help
coordinate the project. Does the project need someone to roll the new
code into a new Test series? Need help testing it?
Coordinate getting this new tar ball out to the maintainers at the
various distributions?
What can I do to help?

Enhanced GQview - alpha quality packages for testing

Hi,

Since there is some progress in our Enhanced GQview project, I have created
some packages for various distributions to allow easy testing.

The packages are here:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/nadvornik:/GQViewE/

Of course you can also compile it yourself from this subversion repository:
http://svn.opensuse.org/svn/GQViewE/

Here is a list of implemented features and TODO:
http://svn.opensuse.org/svn/GQViewE/trunk/README.GQViewE

and here is some kind of project page
http://idea.opensuse.org/content/ideas/enhanced-image-viewer-for-efficient-photo-management

The features are not yet complete, but there were some code infrastructure
changes and I would like to get reports about regressions. I am also
interested in comments about usability of the new features.
