ANNOUNCE: GooCanvas 0.8

Application
===========

GooCanvas 0.8

Description
===========

GooCanvas is a cairo-based canvas widget for GTK+.

I want to freeze the API soon, so now is the time to discuss any
problems with it.

GooCanvas Features:

 o Optional model/view split.
 o Uses interfaces for items & views.
 o Basic items - rect/ellipse/polyline/text/image/group.
 o Path item, using SVG path specification strings.
 o Table item for layout of other items (similar to the GtkTable
   widget). (This also supports items whose requested height changes
   according to their allocated width, such as text items.)
 o Embedded GTK+ widgets.
 o Layers/stacking order with raise/lower functions.
 o Cascading styles - line width/style/dashes, colors, fill patterns.
 o Affine transformations for all items - rotations/scales/skews.
 o Clip paths to support clipping items.
 o Event handling - button/motion events, "pointer-events" property like
   SVG.
 o Grabs - support for pointer & keyboard grabs.
 o Keyboard focus traversal.
 o Accessibility (item title & description properties and hierarchy
   stuff).
 o Printing (output to a given cairo_t).
 o Scrolling.
 o Zooming.
 o Item visibility setting - on/off/above zoom threshold.
 o Simple animation.
 o Scalable - support for thousands of items over a large canvas area.
 o Support for different units - pixels/points/inches/millimeters.
 o API docs.

GooCanvas 0.8   (Apr 3 2007)
=============

 o Added support for "width-for-height" layout - items whose requested
   height changes according to their allocated width (typically text
   items).
 o Added "background-color" and "background-color-rgb" properties to
   GooCanvas.
 o Added "ellipsize" property to GooCanvasText.
 o Added goo_canvas_item_remove() and goo_canvas_item_model_remove()
   convenience functions to remove an item or model from the canvas.
 o Fixed bug removing widget items.
 o Fixed bug which meant that the fill pattern couldn't be reset to
   NULL.
 o Fixed the item event signals, so that returning TRUE from a handler
   stops the signal emission.
 o Added a few things that will be needed to support tooltips, when GTK+
   2.12 is available. (Though I don't want to depend on GTK+ 2.12 yet.)
 o Added "const" to arguments, where appropriate.

Blurb:
======

Goocanvas [1] is a canvas widget for GTK+, It is similar in many ways
to FooCanvas, hence the name, but it uses cairo for rendering, it has
an optional model/view split, and uses interfaces for items & views
(so you can easily turn any application object into a canvas item or
view).

PyGooCanvas is a wrapper which exposes the goocanvas API to the
python world. It is fairly complete; most of the API are covered.

The documentation is done, anyway bug reports on docs are really
important to improve the documentation.

Like the GTK+ library, PyGTK and GooCanvas itself PyGooCanvas is
licensed under the GNU LGPL, so is suitable for use in both
free software and proprietary applications.

PyGooCanvas requires:
=====================

 o Goocanvas >= 0.8.0
 o PyGObject >= 2.10.1 (2.11.3 to build the docs)
 o PyGTK >= 2.10.4
 o PyCairo >= 1.2.0

Bug reports should go to
https://launchpad.net/pygoocanvas/

GDM2 2.18.1 (stable), the "Yisi" Release

AOOH-GAH
--------

If you have no clue what GDM is, refer to the documentation links
at the bottom of this announcement.

The 2.18.1 release is a stable release of the GNOME Display Manager
(GDM) program with the following bug fixes and improvements:

- The GDM configuration option daemon/PidFile is now deprecated and
   GDM now always uses /var/run/gdm.pid. The location can be configured
   at compile time with the configure --with-pid-file option. This
   fixes bug #162849. (William Jon McCann)

- Now GDM supports Xephyr as the Nested Xserver command. GDM will use
   Xephyr by default if it is on the system, and fallback to Xnest.
   Xephyr works much better than Xnest. (Brian Cameron)

- GDM application desktop files now use the correct categories, so the
   menu choices should appear in the correct place in the menu. (Brian
   Cameron)

- Remove the userlist from the circles and happygnome themes since this
   was causing problems for some users. This change will go into 2.20
   where we are fixing the problem better by fixing gdmsetup to support
   setting the configuration so that gdmlogin and gdmgreeter work the
   same way with the Browser key.

- Now gdmgreeter has an ATK label for the entry field. (David Zeuthen)

- Fix check so language combo style works. Fixes bug #423063. (Simon)

- Now "Configure GDM" menu choice is not available when accessibility is
   turned on since running gdmsetup in this configuration causes GDM to
   hang. Until the hanging bug is fixed, it's better to not allow the
   user to get into this situation. (Brian Cameron)

- Now support XnestUnscaledFontPath configuration option, which allows
   GDM to work with Xnest. Xorg 7.2 XGetFontPath function now returns
   fontpath with the ":unscaled" prefix, which Xsun Xnest cannot handle.
   Setting XnestUnscaledFontPath=false, will strip the ":unscaled" prefix
   from the fontpath so that it can work. (Brian Cameron)

- GDM daemon no longer links with D-Bus if ConsoleKit is not enabled.
   (William Jon McCann)

- Translation updates (Takeshi AIHANA, Jakub Friedl, Leonardo Ferreira
   Fontenelle, Pema Geyleg, Priit Laes, Kjartan Maraas, Inaki Larranaga
   Murgoitio, Kostas Papadimas, Ignacio Casal Quinteiro, Hendrik Richter,
   Changwoo Ryu, Claudio Saavedra)

Note:  GDM2 was originally written by Martin K. Petersen <mkp <at> mkp.net>.
Much work has been done on GDM2 by George Lebl; and Brian Cameron
now currently shares maintainership duties with the Queen of England.

Note2: If installing from the tarball do note that make install
overwrites most of the setup files, all except gdm.conf. It will
however save backups with the .orig extension first.
