Announcing Orca v2.17.3

===============
* What is Orca?
===============

Orca is a free, open source, flexible, and extensible screen reader that
provides access to the graphical desktop via user-customizable
combinations of speech, braille, and/or magnification. Orca development
has been led by the Sun Microsystems, Inc., Accessibility Program Office
via continued engagement with its end users and contributions from
wonderful community members.

The Orca 2.17.x series are designated for the GNOME 2.17.x releases,
but should also work well on the GNOME 2.16.x releases.

NOTE ON FIREFOX SUPPORT: we know many of you are anxiously awaiting
compelling access to the web via Orca and Firefox. As of v2.17.3,
the support is still under development and both the Orca and Firefox
teams are working feverishly to get it there for Firefox 3.

==================================
* What's changed for Orca v2.17.3?
==================================

* Implementation of RFE 373566: Added support to switch between
  desktop and laptop bindings. Also added support for allowing the
  Caps Lock key to act as the Orca modifier.

* Added feature to the preferences dialog to present the key bindings
  as progress towards RFE 354970. Many thanks to Jorge Sandín for
  this work!

Glade 3.1.1 snapshot

Hi,
    This is the second snapshot of the 3.1 series (keeping in sync with
gnome 2.17.3). As I mentioned in the 3.1.0 announcement, we are doing a
big UI overhaul in this release cycle so we are eager to hear any comments
people have about the UI, we need your critical eye for detail to help
model a good and usable interface that will hopefully meet everyones needs.

I'm happy to say there's been steady development and we're sure you'll like
what's on the menu :)

What is Glade ?
===============
Glade is a RAD tool to enable quick & easy development of user interfaces
for the Gtk+ toolkit and the GNOME desktop environment.
The user interfaces designed in Glade are stored in XML format,
enabling easy integration with external tools.
In particular libglade can load the XML files and create the interfaces
at runtime. The DTD for the XML files is included with libglade, and is
also at http://glade.gnome.org/glade-2.0.dtd.
Other tools are available which can turn the XML files into source code
in languages such as C++, Perl and Python.

GNOME Power Manager 2.17.3

GNOME Power Manager is a session daemon that makes it easy to manage the
power on your laptop or desktop system.

This _unstable_ release contains lots of new features since 2.17.2 was
released.

==============
Version 2.17.3
==============

Released December 04, 2006

General

 - Add the initial versions of the inhibit and brightness applets.
 - Update the window title to be Power History rather than Power Graphs to
   match the drop down menu. #364200
 - Only allocate a buffer once, globally. #363991 (Stu Hood)
 - Fix several build errors on Solaris. #364621 (Harry Lu)
 - Lots of code structure changes, so now task-gobjects are now responsible
   for applying policy. Actions are now mostly asyncronous and modular.
   Code is now easier to understand IMO, and has a better structure.
 - Add really basic support for sounds when critical events happen, for
   instance if suspend fails and the lid is shut. Prevents melting.
   This uses gst-launch to use gstreamer. Add some sample sounds done by me.
 - Convert multi-instance code from libguniqueapp to GtkUnique.
 - Add gnome-keyring functionality to lock keyrings when sleeping. #375681
 - Use GtkUnique rather than libguniqueapp. Optional but recommended dep.

gedit 2.17.1

gedit is the official text editor of GNOME

While aiming at simplicity and ease of use, gedit is a powerful general
purpose text editor.

Among others, it features full UTF-8 support, syntax highlighting and a
powerful plugin system.

Web site: http://www.gedit.org
Mailing list: http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gedit-list

gedit 2.17.1 is a the first release of the 2.17 development series.
Despite being part of a development series it should be stable.

There weren't any major changes (see below for a detailed list), the
most notable thing is that the spell plugin now uses the enchant library
and the iso-codes package: distros should update the dependencies in
their package.

GDM2 2.17.3 (unstable), the "Boy Its Cold In Chicago" Release

AOOH-GAH
--------

(If you have no clue what gdm is, skip a few paragraphs down first)

The 2.17.3 release is an unstable release of GDM with the following
new features.

- Now all GDM GUI's are run as the gdm user. This change ensures
   that all GDM GUI's can talk to the at-spi-registryd that is
   running. This change involved making the forked slave talk
   to the the GDM daemon so that the dialogs can be displayed.
   The response from the dialog can be returned to the slave.
   There are reports that this bug triggers GDK bug #376315 on
   Linux when a11y is turned off. This will need to be fixed
   before the next GDM stable release. Workaround is to turn
   on a11y until this bug is fixed. (Leena Gunda and Srirama
   Sharma)

- gdmsetup has a new tooltip suggestion. (Calum Benson)

- Now "Default System Session" is renamed to "Run Xclient
   script" which is more accurately what this does. Use xterm
   as fallback instead of xsm, since xsm is not available on all
   Linux. Now zenity pop-up message is displayed when Xclient
   script is not found. (Brian Cameron)

- Fix for TryExec check in gdmsession to make sure that any
   arguments are not passed to g_find_program_in_path since
