Altitude - definition?

Mappoint has the zoom factor expressed as altitude. Why is this? Why not
just a scale factor?

I suspect that a screen showing a map at altitude 3 miles looks the same
scale as what I would see by eye from an aeroplane flying at 3 miles. But
how far am I supposed to be sitting from the screen? Is there an exact
definition of what altitude means in terms of map scale?

Thanks for any guidance on this.

James

Re: Altitude - definition?

Sorry, Eric,

I thought the email was the public forum, I know better now. I've just
found the web based one and have posted another question to it, rather more
urgent this time!

(I see now that the email list is in fact a news list!)

Cheers

James
