I was wondering if you could supply any sample gmt file and ogr2ogr command.

my gmt out contour file seems like this:

3d-plots and masking of lines (grdview, psxyz)

Supposed you have done a 3d-Plot using

grdview eifel.grd -Ieifel_schatten.grd -Cy.cpt $RWERT $PROJ $VSCALE

where 
y.cpt contains a subset of relief.cpt,
ZMINMAX=/280/705

VSCALE=-JZ1.75c
VIEWH=-E195/40+w6:29:50/50:21:39/535m

(these values are not so important)

When plotting a line (river, street) using psxyz, then these lines are drawn
by psxyz correctly as a layer upon the grdview-plot. Now, the problem to
solve is, that they are also drawn where they should be properly covered,
because they run partially "behind" the previous plotted grdview-data (i. e.
mountains).

example:
psxyz eifelbahn.xyz.txt -R -J $VSCALE $VIEWH -O -K  -Wthick,black,-- >>
eifel.ps
(where eifelbahn.xyz.txt contains Line-Data lon/lat/ele)

How can we achieve now, that these lines are masked, but only, where they
need to be obscured by mountains?

Getting CVS

After making the change between a PowerPC Mac to an Intel machine (and changing from Mac OS 10.5 to 10.6) I've
successfully installed GMT4.5.1
and then GMT4.5.2 (although I made the all too common error of initially compiling in 32 bit mode then trying
to link with the 64 bit netcdf library).
	
Now I'd like to set up a CVS installation on my Intel Mac (I had one on the old PowerPC) but I'm running into a
problem. I set up a
new GMTdev directory and tried to do a "cvs login" - when the CVS server prompted me for a password I entered
"gmt-team" and
the server promptly dropped me with no error message.
	
In my .cshrc I have:
setenv CVSROOT :pserver:anonymous <at> pohaku.soest.hawaii.edu:/usr/local/cvs
	
and when I try to "cvs login" I see:
	
geoff% cvs login
Logging in to :pserver:anonymous <at> pohaku.soest.hawaii.edu:2401/usr/local/cvs
CVS password:
	
and then nothing (I entered gmt-team for the password).
	
I turned off my firewall and tried again and got the same result.
	
Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

After I had sent my previous massage message. I tried to convert gmt file to shp.
I did with using QGIS's ogr converter.

But it doesn't have any option to produce any additional field containing some values such as
elevation values.

Fortunately, I am using Linux. I can use the bash.

One more question the what does gid(or fid) indicate in *.dbf file ? Are they equivalent of each z-slice in gmt file ?

Greetings,

The directory that contains the meca GMT-supplement
contains 4 C-shell scripts that illustrate the usage of
psmeca and related programs.  I would run all of
them to illustrate how these programs work.  meca_3.csh
illustrates a tensor solution in the Harvard CMT
format.  Note that the half-dozen or so data formats
that psmeca supports (-S option) all start with
longitude and latitude columns, so you would need
to manipulate the output of your search-download
appropriately.

Alternatively, if you did this search at:
    http://www.globalcmt.org/CMTsearch.html
then you could simply check the "GMT psmeca input"
output-type button.  This would make it easiest
for display with psmeca, I believe.

Yes, QGIS does provide a front end to ogr2ogr.

Also, if your GMT file has a .gmt suffix, you can open it to view onscreen in QGIS, like any other OGR
supported layer, which I find very convenient :-)

The modified GMT structure uses comments to include field (attribute) data, much like the dbf componennt of a shape file does with the geometries in the shp file.

I'm hoping the developers will build support for this format into v5 of GMT, so projection & attribute data can be used by GMT from within GMT files, and GMT will become more interoperable with the OSGEO stack & other FOSS GIS tools.


A working (but not with all options) example is:

# <at> VGMT1.0

# <at> Nstrata|trawl_name
# <at> Tstring|string

The header part contains:

# <at> V (version)
# <at> R (region/extent)
# <at> G (geometry type)
# <at> N (pipe separated list of field names)
# <at> T (pipe separated list of field datatypes)



The data component follows a # FEATURE DATA line, each feature (unless they are points) starting with a > as per the GMT default.

Each feature (preceded by the >) has a # <at> D line, a pipe separated list of data fields matching those specified in the # <at> N & # <at> T lines in the header.

A relatively simple script can add such data to the GMT file, by reading the > line to determine the elevation & adding an elevation field to the header & populating it for each record.

After I had sent my previous massage message. I tried to convert gmt file to shp.
I did with using QGIS's ogr converter.

But it doesn't have any option to produce any additional field containing some values such as
elevation values.

Fortunately, I am using Linux. I can use the bash.

One more question the what does gid(or fid) indicate in *.dbf file ? Are they equivalent of each z-slice in gmt file ?
