Frivolity now on CPAN

My Perl volity packages are now on CPAN.

First of all, this means that lovely HTML docs are now available.

Full collection: http://search.cpan.org/~jmac/Frivolity-0.6.0/
Start page: http://search.cpan.org/~jmac/Frivolity-0.6.0/lib/Volity.pm

Secondly, installing them just became a little easier. (I'd say "a lot
easier" but it's actually been easier since I switched my distribution
style to include a CPAN-aware auto-installer.)

I highly recommend that you use the CPAN module's interactive mode, as
detailed here:

Once you have that going, type "install Volity". Cool, eh?

There is a little cleanup to do on my end -- some of the
prerequisites, such as Tie::Exechash, are no longer necessary. I'll
just silently upload these housekeeping-level changes as I make them.

As always, contact me if you have any problems or questions.

problems building bookkeeper

I have a friend who wants to create a site to play some local card
game (in Ecuador), searching the web I find your site, and I think
you have the right approach.

I decided to test your software in my machine, so I installed the
Widfire Jabber server, download your software via svn, update my Perl
installation using DarwinPorts and cpan, and build the server-perl
and server-python, now I want to build the bookkeeper, but I have
some problems.

First in bookkeeper.pl say the info about the db is in
mysql_tables.sql, but I don't have that file, second when I run 'perl
Build.PL' I obtain this warning:

then when I run ./Build (or sudo ./Build) I was expecting to obtain

Glad to hear it!

Are you sure? It should be in a directly called "sql" within the
bookkeeper-perl directory you got through svn.

I last updated it only a couple of days ago, so if you performed your
checkout prior to that, you may wish to do an update.

Ah... I can fix these, thanks.

OK, now I have the sql directory.

Hex and Y Implemented

Hello there, everyone.

I've implemented versions of both Hex:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hex_(board_game)

and Y:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y_(game)

for Volity. They use the Python server/referee code for the
backend, and (of course) SVG + ES for the frontend. A lot of
code is shared between the two, because the games are fairly
similar.

I've also made all the code I've written available in a SVN
repository. As I don't have access to Le Official SVN Repo,
it's in one that resides on my home computer. So don't be
surprised if it's a twee bit slow, down at random times, etc. :)

The URI is:

    svn://hudson.thenexusproject.org/volity-phil

You would check it out via:

    svn co svn://hudson.thenexusproject.org/volity-phil volity-phil

or the like.

Cool! If you're looking for players, you might want to advertise on
the abstractgames Yahoo Group. I thought there was also a group
specifically for connection games, but I can't seem to find it. There
is a group for Unlur, though (one specific connection game).

I'm not entirely sure I'm ready to advertise it in the "free and clear,"
especially since the servers are still running off of my desktop at home
and therefore are prone to, uh, difficulties when we have a brownout (which
is, alas, more common than I'd like.) If I do, though, I'll do it to the
abstractgames list (of which I'm a member) and probably the pbmserv-users
list as well.

Thanks for the suggestion. :)

As I told jmac yesterday, I'm also willing to give what guidance I can to
aspiring developers. The games I did weren't particularly complex on either
the UI side or the server side, but I'll help with what I can.

Windows installer knowledge needed

(Preface: We have renamed Javolin to Gamut, and this is official with
the release (0.3.2) that I made yesterday. Rationale here:
http://prog.livejournal.com/569415.html)

It's high time to make a single Windows installer for Gamut. I have
been avoiding this for a while because, to be honest, none of us here
at the office are Windows experts; we're all Mac hackers and Linux
fans. So up through today Windows users have had to choose between two
Gamut (neƩ Javolin) packages to download, depending upon whether or
not they had Java installed on their system. One is an .exe sitting by
itself, and one is an .exe next to a JRE folder. Dumb as that.

I very much want to drop this strategy in favor of a one-download-fits
all one, where the user gets an installer that determines how
Java-happy the computer is, and acts accordingly.

So. Any of y'all consider yourselves comfortable enough around
Windows-installation-land to give us a hand with figuring out how we
should do this? I'm about to go wading into trying to figure out how
this works, but would very much appreciate any guidance or advice.

Frivolity 0.6.2 release

Just uploaded Frivolity 0.6.2 to volity.org and to CPAN (where it make
take another day or two to percolate out to your favorite mirrors). It
does a bit of cruft cleanup and also fixes a nasty bug that would
sometimes crash parlors after their internal Volity::Game objects were
destroyed. It should be a simple upgrade, and I recommend it to all
Perl-based Volity hackers.
