license question

Hi guys,
I'd like to know, if I can use the dejavu sans font for a company logo
without any restrictions or problems. I didn't really understand all of
the license and want to be sure, so it would be great, if you could help
me with that!
Thanks a lot!
Stefan

You can. There are no limitations on documents made with the font, so
use it however you want. The only restrictions in the license are
about redistributing the font itself.

Greetings
Ben

I would be really grateful if any of you can assist me even a little with my problem.

I am trying for a month already to add Hebrew font on my Motorola i1 phone (Android v1.5 OS).
Just need it to display properly messages and contacts in Hebrew.
Is there any way I can add the font to my phone.

Thank very much in advance,

Hi,

before we can go ahead and commit your patch, could you tell us a bit
more about your design? For ease of reference, (comparative) renderings
and illustrations would be helpful. Note that since the DejaVu fonts are
widely distributed bundled with various Linux distros and projects such
as OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice we have to weigh up potential improvements
against stability expected by users.

In any case, a patch for Sans Mono would be very much appreciated and
could be readily included.

Regards,
Gee Fung Sit

Hey,

Hi,

The original Hebrew glyph set in DejaVu was not designed (As far as I know) by a Hebrew-reading developer,

That's right, I did the original design for the set. Admittedly I'm not a native user.

and was based on Arial and Tahoma, both considered bad fonts in Hebrew, and the latter being very unproportional and badly designed. As a result, DejaVu was unreadable in Hebrew. While it was reasonable (but far from good) on screen, it's a terrible choice for print (Making it a bad selection in OpenOffice and other office software suites.) DejaVu Hebrew original is too wide (The bold version being very wide), being based on Tahoma's proportions. The fact it's a mix between Arial and Tahoma make it sometimes inconsistent.

Both Arial and Tahoma follow so design "trends" that are not suitable to a Non-decorative Hebrew Sans (The Lamed and Kof shape in Arial for example, which is more suitable to a Serif font. The Gimel leg in both has a vertical terminal which is more suitable to decorative fonts. Tahoma includes serifs in Samekh, Yod, Vav and Nun) which DejaVu followed.

Comparison of the 4 fonts attached.

Thank you for the explanation, having someone put his finger on the issues really helps. In hindsight the lamed/kof issue should have been obvious, but the rest of the problems were much harder to spot.

Note that the New Dejavu is not metric-compatible with the old version which might cause some problems with office suites. However, considering the new Dejavu is thinner than the old one, and the fact that most existing Hebrew documents use Arial and Tahoma the problems should be minor, if any.

Please note that the attached version has slightly updated and it's handled by Eimai as of now. The Mono version is already under development.

That's good to hear, I was under the impression that there has been no response to your effort, hence my first reply. I'll leave you in Ben's capable hands then.

-Lior Halphon.
