BRAINSTORM: Tech Tutorial Screencasts during Weekly Developer Meetings

Hello all,

Krishnan recently suggested a great idea to help onboard new volunteers and make our weekly developer meetings more educational - weekly technical tutorials with recorded screencasts on how to carry out certain tasks related to Mifos development.  These tasks might be for brand new developers or for folks just looking to get more up to speed on the Mifos codebase.

It's a chance for our senior contributors and experienced Mifos developers to pass their knowledge and help bring in a new generation of Mifos developers.

Krishnan started out this list of ideas he'd like to be explored over time.  Please edit this page with ideas for topics you'd like to be covered.  Let's help make the learning curve for new Mifos developers a little less steep!

The first topic that we'll be covering this week is using Git.

Brainstorm your ideas here:

Weekly Open Developer Meeting - Feb 1, 2012

Hello everyone,

As you saw in the other email, this week's open developer meeting will be starting an hour earlier.

Call-in Details are the same:

Skype: freeconferencing.0900 (call this user)
US telephone number: +1-712-432-0900
Access code: 577857 #

We want to welcome all developers, new and old, to join these calls. We'll be starting up some more brainstorming and idea generation on technical topics related to Mifos and kicking off tech tutorial screencasts to help get newcomers up to speed.

This weeks first tutorial suggested by Krishnan and led by Jakub will cover the basics of git including:

Forking mifos on github, pull requests, JIRA, etc.

  • How to fork mifos on github, how to create a pull request and what happens to these requests
  • Reviewing patches - Testing on hudsonBuild and waiting on results to either merge/reject patches.
  • Commit descriptions and JIRA ticket comments.
  • Achieving successful pull requests - Running tests locally and not pushing commits until these pass.

Share your thoughts on other tech tutorial screencasts you'd like to see on this page: http://mifosforge.jira.com/wiki/display/RES/Tech+Tutorials+Brainstorm

Re: help:Exception when Adding method to Existed Action class and the corresponding forward jsp is new pop up window.

Hi Prudhvi,

If you are still stuck with this issue, could you send or share the
patch from git that you have developed. I will try to help as much as
I can. You can also try to use github where it's easier to fork the
code base and share the changes with other developers.

There is nothing Mifos specific in your question, the part which you
are looking at is mostly struts 1.x and spring security.

Spring Mobile Integration : Thoughts

Hi,

Just wanted to share some thoughts about very interesting SMI work.

I looked at some of the initial commits
https://github.com/mifos/head/commit/7c5c53e769565ee1d6efc28650ab18d14764f7a6
https://github.com/mifos/head/commit/a08ac0bc056df4f44d5e68049566f2e7fac91e46

- We should have module called mobile
- Have controllers, ftl and resources in that module related to
Mobile, no need to reuse userinterface for Mobile UI buildup.
- Don't reuse the controllers by isMobile condition from user interface module
- Having isMobile in every userInterface controller will result in
code cluttering, this logic should be at one place.
- Use Jquery Mobile http://jquerymobile.com/

We don't need to reuse anything from old Mifos (including Spring/FTL)
UI framework to build mobile version.

I wouldn't force a user to go to a mobile version or desktop version
by detecting his/her device, but I would recommend a link to mobile
site if a user is trying to look into desktop version from a mobile
device. At the same time I would want a desktop user to also be able
to see the mobile version if he wants to do that explicitly. Many
people disagree with this argument but I think that it is not a strict
rule. I know one tool (fogbuqz) which uses this philosophy gracefully.

In general device detection is useful in some very specific cases
(hacks) where something which doesn't work on a particular display
device could be handled specifically until it is fixed in a better or
more generic way.

I think in SMI work you have freedom to think in terms of services
facades and REST services to make use of service layer and build a
better version on Mifos UI in Mobile module instead of reusing the old
Mifos UI.

Now, I might have repeated myself a lot above as I am excited to see
work in this direction, I am trying to avoid is some patterns that in
future would result in unnecessary work.

Good work,

Cheers,
Udai
