injector .deb python dependency

I tried to upgrade debian etch today, but couldn't, because the injector
package depends on python == 2.3 and etch upgrades its python version to
2.4.
I think it would better to depend on python2.3, like:

Depends: [...], python2.3

and change the first line in
/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/zeroinstall/0launch-gui/0launch-gui
and /usr/bin/0* from:

#!/usr/bin/python

to:

#!/usr/bin/python2.3

Does the Ubuntu package work? The use of Python 2.4 should be the only
difference. If so, I'll add a note on the web site.

Debian has a python-support / python-central system for automatically
upgrading to newer Python versions but we don't use it because it's not in
Debian/stable. It may be time to start producing two debs (one for stable
and one for testing/unstable).

That's another option. I'm just following the Debian recommendation, which
is to depend on ${python:Depends} and let Debian choose the dependencies.

Thanks,

I've uploaded a new .deb which uses python-central now:

  http://0install.net/injector.html

Please test it and let me know if it solves the problem - thanks!

Displaying changes

Hi all,

When the injector tells you that a new version is available, it would be
really helpful to see a list of changes between the previously selected
version and the new one.

Any idea how we should do that?

Some options:

- Inside each implementation, provide a new element:
  <changes href='...'/>

- Put a summary inside the interface file:
  <changes> ...text... </changes>

- Use a CGI script:
  GET http://.../changes?fromVersion=1.2&toVersion=5.0

Ideally, I'd link to link to the existing summaries on freshmeat,
sourceforge, etc. Putting the changes inside the interface will bloat it
out quickly, especially if we add translations. Because of all the stuff
sourceforge puts around the actual text, we can't suck it all into a
simple text box, though, so we might have to write the changes to a
separate file.

Having it outside the interface and viewed with a web-browser means that
the text won't be signed (which is probably OK).

Working out which versions to show may be interesting (does the 2.4
changelog show changes from 2.3, or from 2.3.1?).

Also, binaries for other platforms should be able to link to the changelog
for the main version.

Thoughts?

Roadmap

I've added a roadmap page to the web-site, so we can keep track of major
features this might/should be implemented by the injector:

People may be limited in what CGI scripts their web hosting supports. I
know I can't add any to http://www.kerofin.demon.co.uk/ for example.

On a related note, I've been trying to get apache set up on this machine,
which would give me more control, and it serves fine to this machine but I
can't get it to work outside my firewall setup! Curiously the CVS setup
works fine but I can't see what I've done different...

Cancel that. It's working fine, it was just the machine I was trying to
test it from...

What this means is that you can view my current work on ROX-CLib, Clock,
VideoThumbnail etc. at http://kerofin.demon.co.uk/viewcvs/ (NOT
http://www.kerofin.demon.co.uk/). I may in the near future start uploading
snapshots there.
