Using the latest CVS snapshop as of 2003/12/29 xfsdump won't compile.  It fails
with the message:

[Bug 300] Lookup while "mkisofs"ing a DVD-Image

OK. I've recreated the filesystem with doubled agcount.

This also explains why "cp -av"ing the data around ("dump & restore") wasn't a
problem because the biggest file copied was only(tm) 3,4 GB in size.

Creating the DVD-Image hadn't crashed the machine (3 tries).
I hope this was my first and last problem with XFS (knocking on wood). :-)

We have a 7500-12, The raid5 is 8 disks + hot spare (XFS mounted
on /backup). We attempted to add a raid0 with two disks but this
seems to be too much load. This two disk raid0 was software raid
but we kept getting io errors
	{DriveReady SeekComplere Error}

The test is simply reading or writing (dd) a large file. For example:
	10GB /dev/zero   -> /backup	3m57 (43 MB/s)
	10GB /backup     -> /dev/null	7m20 (23 MB/s)
We do each 'dd' twice and take the second copy as the result. The
machine is otherwise idle.

This copying is a good measure for us since this machine is an online
backup service and it will mostly have large files copied to it and
from it.

Each disk alone on an IDE cable does about 55MB/s (hdparm, not real

Here are the results for the raid0 on the 3ware (/dev/sdb, ext2
on /ssaback):

Access to 2.6-xfs CVS tree

It was announced on the list a few months ago that the 2.6-xfs CVS
tree had been withdrawn while legal issues (cryptographic export?)
were sorted out.

What's the current status?

I live in Australia and I'm interested in trying the latest 2.6-xfs.

From mkfs.xfs or xfs_info output, take agsize * bsize,
to get the size of an AG in bytes.

The 2.6 tree should be available by cvs following the instructions
at http://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/cvs_download.html; if you have
trouble let us know.

RE: blocksize question


I have not tried the dd test yet.  I'll be getting to that tomorrow.  On a
dual 3.06 Xeon, I received a performance spread of 7MB/sec to 29MB/sec using
smbtorture across GbE using a crossover cable.  My client was a 1.4GHz P4.
The server also had 512MB.  The 29MB/sec was at 12 clients.  After that, the
output was a consistent 21.xxMB/sec up to 53 clients. I did this test using
an external log, which I have found to be much faster on such testing than
using the internal log.

However, I did the same test with an LSI controller and obtained over
40MB/sec at 53 clients.  I'm trying to also repeat the test using MD RAID.
In the past, I've had MD RAID doing over 50MB/sec on the same test.  But I
do want to repeat just to be sure.

Also, I have some messages over to the 3Ware folks to see if they can help
on this.  It sounds like the external journal should help you some.  

Any idea what the block size is on ext2 system?  I'm wondering if that may
be the issue.  The default you're using on your xfs system is probably 4K.

XFS external log questions

Few questions about setting up and using a proper external log:

I have a system whose only drive is a raid 5 array. I assume putting hte
log on the array itself, on another partition, would be pretty useless,
if the data is on the array also. So, I could put in anohter drive, but
what are the usual redundency requirements for the external log? I
assume if it fails, the entire partition fails also.

So, one would need two raid setups to use this effectively? How much
data does the log usually use?

There are a couple of reasons for using an external log.
If there is a dedicated block device for the log, then
log writes won't cause the head to seek away from the data,
which could speed things up.  Of course in a raid this is
probably less critical, as the notion of "the head" is a little

Also, log writes are done in sector-sized units, while data
writes are done in filesystem block-sized units.  In software
MD raids, this size-switching is very inefficient.  Putting
the log on an external device alleviates this (as would setting
the sector size equal to the block size, but I think that codepath
is a bit less tested).  I don't think that hardware raid performance
suffers from this size-switching, but I suppose some implementations
might.  I'm not well-versed in hardware raids.

The log does not take up much space at all, maximum 65536
filesystem blocks, or 256M on a 4k block filesystem.  Defaults
are usually much smaller than this.

If the log device fails, you don't lose the whole filesystem,
but you will lose any metadata in the log.  You could recover
by replacing the device, and running xfs_repair -L to zero
out the log device and repairing the fallout from the missing
log.  Not ideal, but it should not be catastrophic.
