[sshfs] Getting "remote host has disconnected" error

Hello

I used to be able to use sshfs perfectly well. I've now upgraded to ubuntu dapper (2.6.15-22 686 kernel), and
I get the error "remote host has disconnected" whenever I run sshfs. It doesn't matter what the host is; I
can even type gibberish and it still gives me the error. The errors happens before the point where sshfs
normally asks for the ssh password.

Of course I can still ssh, sftp etc. to the site. I noticed someone else had the same problem, and fixed it by
reverting to an older kernel. I can't revert, so I hope you can help. sshfs is tremendously helpful for me!

I am using sshfs v 1.6.

I tried to post the output of strace -f here but the message got rejected by "the moderator" for being too
long. I can send you the output via a separate email if you wish.

Can you first try

  sshfs -d -osshfs_debug ...

Strace may also be interesting, but most of the time it's not needed
to see what the problem is.

[sshfs] mount through fstab at boot time

Hello,

i have troubles to mount through fstab at boot time. When the computer is up i
can mount as root without giving a pwd: "mount /path/" and it is mounted...

The interesting lines from /var/log/boot
Sun May 14 17:27:56 2006: WARNING: bad format on line 12 of /etc/fstab
Sun May 14 17:27:56 2006: remote host has disconnected
Sun May 14 17:27:56 2006: ^[[31m*^[[39;49m Mounting local filesystems failed
with error code 65.

What could be the fault?

Thanks
Stolzi

The warning is harmless, and due to fsck not liking the '#' character.

I don't know what's the cause of the mount failure. Try adding
'debug,sshfs_debug,loglevel=debug' to the mount options.

[sshfs] Umask or File Permissions Control

Hi,

I just spent a good while evaluating sshfs on a new Suse 10.1
installation. I used Yast to install fuse and sshfs packages.

It seems to work great. But one problem will keep me from using it
much. It may not be a problem with sshfs or fuse. In fact, I spent a
couple of hours researching bash and ssh environment settings to control
umask before I capitulated and wrote this message.

When mounting a shared filesystem (one shared by Samba to many users in
this case), I find no way to make files group writable. In this case,
file access is controlled by group membership and g+w permissions are
needed.

Is there a way to set the umask to 002? Perhaps by manipulating ssh or
bash environments?

Thanks,

G

This page contains useful tips:

  http://wiki.gnuarch.org/Centralized_20Development

For my colleague the one under the heading:

"Using multiple accounts, a group, and a sftpd-wrapper without
  changing global configuration"

worked best.

You can also try to use the '-ostp_server=path_to_wrapper' option of
sshfs.

[sshfs] SSHFS "ln"

Hi,
I was wondering if you planned to implement the hard link function in
sshfs. (I relied on sshfs to use with rsnapshot that uses hard links
for backuping without copying unmodified files if you want to know :)
)
thanks, bye

This is not possible to do, as the SFTP protocol lacks this operation.

Updating the protocol and the server is a different project, which I'd
rather not get involved with too deeply. You may try asking the
OpenSSH folks.
