I have installed Xen 3.3 from source on top of Ubuntu 8.04, tap:aio
and file: both work fine for my HVM guests.

[Virengeprüft] How setup shorewall with xen-3.3 ?

Hi @ all,

i want to use shorewall in my dom0 and domU's, but i have a little bit
trouble with it.

I followed thhis HowTo:
http://www.shorewall.net/Xen.html

But in this HowTo they works with xenbr0 bridge, and in the new xen config,
there is no bridge with that name. In my system the bridge has the name
eth0...

So, i have the interfaces
eth0 (bridge and device ?)
peth0 the real net device
and the vif intderface for my domU

Can someone give me a tip, what is the right configure way for this
scenario ?

I hope someone can help me or give me a tip
and sorry for my bad english.

Best regards
Torsten

Network Performence Scoping

I am looking to scope a server  from a network perspective.
The virtual machines will be Linux Apache web servers with fairly high network trafic receiving small requests.

How many of these virtual machine I can bind to a single Gigabit NIC ?
Will it be possible to fully use the gigabit interface ?
Up to how many gigabits NIC XEN performance starts to decrease ?
Also, is there a "preferred" NICs brand to use with XEN ?

Thanks in advance for helping

Scoping with XEN

I am looking to scope a server running under XEN hypervisor,  from a network perspective.
The virtual machines will be Linux Apache web servers with fairly high network trafic receiving small requests.

My questions are:
How many of these virtual machine I can/Should I bind to a single physical Gigabit NIC ?
Will it be possible to fully use the gigabit interface ?
Up to how many gigabits NIC XEN performance starts to decrease ?
Is there a "preferred" NICs brand to use with XEN ?

Thanks in advance for helping

"vm_monitor is an unknown resource agent"

The script is running perfectly well.

Can you please help me out with this.

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron x64 w/ Xen 3.2 hangs on boot at /etc/rc.local

I've had the exact same issue with ubuntu hardy heron, using standard apt-get installs. Unbelievable that a distribution like this can be broken with this stupid mistake. It took me some time digging in the init-scripts to find the problem was in het following file:
Check your file: /etc/event.d/tty1, it should be like this:
# tty1 - getty
#
# This service maintains a getty on tty1 from the point the system is
# started until it is shut down again.

start on stopped rc2
start on stopped rc3
start on stopped rc4
start on stopped rc5

stop on runlevel 0
stop on runlevel 1
stop on runlevel 6

respawn
exec /sbin/getty 38400 tty1

For some reason this file was changed into something with xvc0 and added some lines. I restored this file from a working system, and everything's ok now. Not sure what package caused the problem, though.

I've now tried adding hvc0 to /etc/securetty but nothing changed.
I've now noticed that it says "Loading local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local)          [OK]"
That has to mean it doesn't hang at rc.local but the one after rc.local or something like that.. ?
And the one behind S99rc.local is S99rmnologin:

/etc/rc2.d/S99rmnologin
/etc/rc3.d/S99rmnologin
/etc/rc4.d/S99rmnologin
/etc/rc5.d/S99rmnologin
(/etc/init.d/rmnologin)

I've attached it to this mail. Maybe you could send me yours and I'll check the if there's any difference.

murmel <at> xen:~$ md5sum /etc/init.d/rmnologin
e48b235c7c2ea0550f6a6ed2f3f769b3  /etc/init.d/rmnologin

Check and see if you got the same md5sum.-

My ubuntu 8.04 /etc/event.d/tty1 has

my /etc/securrety file has:

those at the end for the xen consoles
xvc0
hvc0

The menu.lst is unmodified, seems fine to me...

It works for me.
Hope that helps,

Re: Installing a Debian Etch DomU using debootstrap

I am still having the problem with the tty. I cannot xm console into a
running domU.

My setup is: dom0: Debian Etch with a custom kernel. My domU is a
Debian Etch with kernel 2.6.18-6-xen-amd64

I have discovered that for domU with 2.6.18 one must use xvc0, and
with kernels >= 2.6.25 one must use hvc0.

I have finally managed to use debootstrap to create a VM. When my VM
gets created, I see the console appear if I use "xm create -c VM", and
the console is tty1. But if I do ctrl+] to leave the console, I can no
longer "xm console" into. However when I do "xm reboot VM", then if I
am fast enough, I can "xm console" into it.

What is wrong with my configuration? I know I am missing a piece in
this puzzle what is it? This is getting crazy.

Here is my configuration file:
---
extra = 'console=xvc0 xencons=xvc0' # Use xvc0 for kernel 2.6.18
#extra = 'console=hvc0 xencons=hvc0' # Use hvc0 for kernels >= 2.6.25
---

My /etc/inittab:
---
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
4:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
5:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
6:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6
---

/etc/securetty:
---
/etc/securetty: list of terminals on which root is allowed to login.
# See securetty(5) and login(1).
console
xvc0
hvc0

Re: windows xp/xen cpu utilization

Hi,
I also found high cpu loading of my windows xp domain too.
It showed 100% cpu loading on `xm top`.
However, I've checked the loading in Task Manage of WindowsXP. It is normal.

Have you find the anwser about this problem already?
Thx.

I thought this might be due to my "(network-script
network-bridge-wrapper)" script which sets up eth1 and well as eth0,
so took it out but made no difference, xen-hotplug.log still empty,
any clues how to trace what's going on?
