Xen - AoE benchmarks

hi all
forgive me if this question has already been answered (i couldnt find any
:( )..

I am working on some xen based cluster where we were thinking of using AoE
for storage management -rather than pinning a DomU's data partition to the
same host (same stuff which everybody does)

here comes my question:
I have read in several places that AoE is sleek and fast for certain
conditions,etc etc. But i couldnt find any real Xen-AoE combination (or
atleast linux AoE) benchmarks in the internet.

I managed to stumble upon several Coraid benchmarks - but they arent useful
at all. because the coraid disks are connected by a MyriNet NIC (i guess
1/10 Giga bit nic card) and its their implementation.

I am looking at benchmarks for a simple 100 MBps ethernet lan (or a 1GBps
ethernet lan) - Dedicated for Aoe, based on the vblade/aoe kernel modules..
There are no racks/special storage servers. Its just a set of commodity
machines in the cluster. each machine has a dedicated nic card for aoe
tasks, while the other is used for cluster communication/ communication to
the internet.
-----Note that these machines are also performing computationally intensive
tasks sometimes.

-----Some things i would definitely like to know are ,
--If a host A is busy, does it affect the host B's AoE data fetch
from host A its hard drive significantly?
--What kind of bandwidths (atleast a ballpark number) can i expect,

Opensuse 10.3 does not charge dom0

I decided to upgrade from openSuse 10.2 to openSuse 10.3. I installed xen things, but when I boot using xen option the system is blocked. It appears the green window, with little suse logo in the middle, and mouse cursor, but the system crashes.
My computer is a Pentium 4 1,5 GHz, 512 MB of RAM.

I attached "diff boot.msg boot.omsg" (as diff opensuse-normal-kernel opensuse-xen-kernel) and xend.log

Thanks

Re: Xen and networking.

Ok, well I have it working....

The following NFS mount options:
hard,intr,vers=3,tcp,wsize=32768,wsize=32768,timeo=600

Here are the changes to the /etc/sysctl.conf file on the Guests
(for the host, the last line, sunrpc, is not available, so remove it)

net.core.netdev_max_backlog = 3000
net.core.rmem_default = 256960
net.core.rmem_max = 16777216
net.core.wmem_default = 256960
net.core.wmem_max = 16777216
net.core.rmem_default = 65536
net.core.wmem_default = 65536
net.core.rmem_max = 8388608
net.core.wmem_max = 8388608
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 4194304
net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 16384 4194304
net.ipv4.tcp_mem = 4096 4096 4096
sunrpc.tcp_slot_table_entries = 128

Also, add "/sbin/sysctl -p" as the first entry in /etc/init.d/netfs to
make sure that the setrtings get read before any NFS mounts take
place.

For the record, I get 95-102MB/sec each with a simple DD

Xen + GFS on Ubuntu?

Hi all,

I'm trying to give my domU's access to a shared filesystem on a Coraid
AoE device (SR1521) and it's causing me pain.
It seems that redhat-cluster-suite is broken on Ubuntu 7.10 amd64. I
tried with Hardy alpha 2 and it started up OK.

Has anyone been able to get Xen + GFS working on Ubuntu? What version?

thanks,

Mike

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8, 1)

Hello,

I have seen a similar post about the "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS:
Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)" problem in the mailing
list, but no one has posted the solution. So, asking it agian.

I am facing problems in creating new virtual machine. I have installed
Xen3.0 using apt-get on Ubuntu (dom0) and it starts up fine.

Following is my vm config file:
------------
name="vm01"
kernel="/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-xen"
root="/dev/sda1"
memory=128
disk=['file:/vserver/images/vm01.img,sda1,w']

# network
#vif=[ '' ]
dhcp="off"
ip="192.168.0.3"
netmask="255.255.255.0"
gateway="192.168.0.1"
hostname="kavuri"

extra="3"
------------

When I try to start the virtual machine vm01, I get an error mount
error as under:

Re: Xen - AoE benchmarks

For my two bits, I'd recommend using at least Gigabit Ethernet.  As cheap as Gigabit Ethernet infrastructure is getting, you might as well just get that and not do 100 megabit.  100 Mb = 12 MB, whereas Gigabit is 120 MB.  SATA drives burst at 150 or 300 MB/s.  Really old IDE drives were at least 33 MB/s and went up to 120 MB/s or so.  I'd stick with Gigabit.

hi all
forgive me if this question has already been answered (i couldnt find any

-----Note that these machines are also performing computationally intensive
tasks sometimes.

from host A its hard drive significantly?
--What kind of bandwidths (atleast a ballpark number) can i expect,
when compared between a in host hard disk access and remote host AoE based
hard disk access?

If such bench marks are available anywhere, would somebody please point me
to the links or any such source where i can dig it from?

thanks in advance.

You need to create an initramfs or initrd file and add the filesystem to
it. Then add a module stanza in your menu.lst file.

Hope this helps,

Howto: change CD during an HVM install

Heads up for anyone who's stuck with trying to change a CD half-way
through an HVM installation; I couldn't find an answer to this on Google.

1 - just changing the file which contains the ISO image does nothing

2 - in principle, you can get into the Qemu monitor from your
installation Window, and change the disk from the monitor. You should
apparently type CTL-ALT-2 to enter the monitor, or CTL CTL CTL-ALT-2.
This doesn't work for me - has this been removed from current Xens?
There was some concern about security issues on the devel mailing list.

3 - the xm way (doesn't work):

 > /usr/sbin/xm block-list -l xm_domain_name

find the entry which include "(device-type cdrom)", note the number at
the beginning of this entry (in my case, 5632).

 > /usr/sbin/xm block-detach xm-domain-name 5632
 > /usr/sbin/xm block-attach xm-domain-name file://path/to/my/ISO /dev/hdc r

Note that the mode is 'r', not 'ro'; the man page is wrong. This doesn't
work, and you get an error message on the block-attach; the man page
says that block-detach is "currently" broken. If you do a block-list
after the block-detach you'll see that nothing's changed.

4 - the virsh way (does work):

 > virsh list

get the Id number of your domain from the first column

 > virsh detach-disk Id-number hdc
 > virsh attach-disk Id-number /path/to/your/new/ISO hdc --driver file
--type cdrom --mode readonly

I think this is the problem here too. Over Christmas I downloaded the
opensuse KOTD, hoping that it maybe fixes the problem. the dom0 was
disconnected from network, and I had two domU's running, and I copied a 650
MB file between these two via scp, for thousand times.

Two days ago, I connected the dom0 to the network again, and started using
the domU's as file/print/... servers again.
It took about an hour, and the server was frozen again, without any notice
in /var/log/messages.

I created a bugreport, maybe you can add your observations there too.

I use dom0_mem, yes, but with and without this parameter, in both cases the
dom0 froze.
