Re: LVM & volume groups

Hi,

It depends what do you mean by "all" domU! How many? We have been using single volume group for atleast 3-4 domU's and never had a problem!

Omer

They can share one, but you will want to use CLVM if you don't want to
screw everything up for yourself.  This will also soften the blow of
moving to shared storage if/when you get more Xen hosts.

Short answer: you don't. Use 2.6 or do full virtualization.

I'm  new to xen but for a test loaded everything from server running
redhat 6.2.
Was running 2.2.22. Xen is running 2.6.18.
It's an old accounting system and want to reuse the hardware.

As I recall I copied everything into a lvm partition.
Fixed  up the fstab.
Changed ip as old server is still up.
Copied in the modules for the xen kernel.
A few error message but do not  think they matter.
Like it complains that /proc is already mounted.
Seems to work fine although my tests were not extensive.

Old OS images arfe sometimes an adventure. Can you simply remount /proc to clear the complaint?

Windows 2003 HVM Performance

Hello all,

I have recently been trying to install a windows 2003 server on a Xen Dom0 with
an AMD X2 CPU. I've not actually been able to finish the installation due to
the Dom0 host crashing whilst the Windows installation is "registering
components". Hopefully the latest version of OpenSUSE (which I'm downloading
at the moment) will fix that? :-)

During the installation I noticed that the section of the install that copied
files to the harddisc didn't execute very fast which prompted me to google for
xen HVM harddisc performance figures. I read some references to a windows
paravirtualised harddisc driver that would improve performance. Does anyone
know whether paravirtualised drivers are in development? I also read that
network performance is near native so would it make sense to install windows on
a partition on the Dom0 and then create a D drive on the windows machine using
an iSCSI initiator? This would mean that the domU would be relying on it's
near native network performance for harddisc accesses. Has anyone tried this?

I'd be interested to hear any advice on settings/tweaks to improve windows HVM
performance.

Many thanks in advance,

Steve.

Xen install error: URGENT pls help

Hi all
I installed Fedora core 6 over my fully virtualized system and it was
installed successfully. But now i am trying to install XEN using following
command i.e.

Please help me out in this problem. And i was also looking for the option to
install XEN along with FC6 but i couldnt find any option . There was one
option to include exta software, i tried that but it created some error and
computer was hanged.

Windows paravirtualized device drivers for disk and network would be a lot
faster, but those are not publicly available :(

They are part of Virtual Iron and Xen Enterprise products only.. :(

What about fixing your yum.conf / network first? Your errors aren't related to xen.

thanks for replying.
Do you know how to fix that?
I am quite new in linux and xen.

Fedora community website and google in general, I am not a FC/RedHat fan, I think you'd better learn a bit more about linux before trying xen.

4GB byte count overflow hangs networking (was Re: domUs dropping off the network (Xen 3.0.2))

To follow up on this post: the problem happens when the number of bytes
received by the vif on the dom0 side (and therefore transmitted by the
domU) hits 4GB (or within a few kB thereof).

In tests I have verified this against a Xen 3.0.2 system (although it
doesn't always manifest, so perhaps there are other factors in place
too), and have also verified that with Xen 3.0.3 it seems to happen less
often.

Cheers,

Dominic.
