Cloning a PearPC "disk drive"

Hello,

This is a question that probably applies primarily to Mac OS X users, but I
think it maybe a particularly interesting problem on PearPC.

Does somebody know how I could "clone" a whole Mac OS X installation from
one PearPC "disk drive" to another, knowing that the second drive will not
have the same size than the first one ?

Actually I need to "downgrade" the size of an already installed disk because
I want to copy it to a Fat32 partition, Fat32 partitions cannot have files
larger than 4 gigabytes, and the current file is a little larger than that.

I want to put it on a Fat32 partition because, for developing purposes, I
want it to be accessible both from a Windows XP installation and from a
Linux installation on the same computer, and, as far as I know, Linux is
still unable to securely have write access to NTFS partitions.

Of course, I could make a fresh new installation, but I would be happy if I
could avoid spending 8 hours again for making this installation, not
counting some applications installed after it.

I already don't know how to make such a copy on a real Macintosh (this seems
to need a root access that I don't know how to get), but I'm afraid that
there is also a lot of chances that the whole filesystem copy would be
difficult to do without problems on PearPC ...

RE: Cloning a PearPC "disk drive"

Hi

I used Carbon Clone Copier by Mike Bombich at
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html to clone my 3Gb PearPC disk
drive to a larger 4Gb one, assuming that the total used space on your
disk drive is less than 4Gb you should be able to clone your disk drive
to a smaller one.

Cheers

Re: Cloning a PearPC "disk drive"

MacOS X can only run on HFS+ drives or Unix drives, it is not
compatible with FAT32, FAT, or NTFS...you can easily duplicate your
emulated drive simply by copying the image, renaming it and then
adding it your PearPC configuration file

I was speaking about the Drive image, which IS an HFS+ image, but which can
RESIDE (as beeing actually a big file) on Fat32 or NTFS, and in fact on any
filesystem that can host the PearPC emulator.

My problem is that Fat32 cannot have files larger than 4 gigabytes.

Re: Cloning a PearPC "disk drive"

I remeber there is some Java piece of software able to resize any pearpc
HDD image ... But I don't remeber where it is ... I also don't know if
it correctly works nor how it works indeed. You may google for it and
try it (And I assume you should then consider making a backup copy of
you image).

Re: Cloning a PearPC "disk drive"

Hi,

Here's a simple guide to resizing pearpc images:

Re: Cloning a PearPC "disk drive"

oh sorry...you could turn it into a ext2 linux partition instead which
shouldn't have this limit and then use this free app to mount the
partition in windows: http://ext2fsd.sourceforge.net/ :-)

Re: Cloning a PearPC "disk drive"

Just a quick note that the http://www.emaculation.com/articles/ppchd.pdf
guide does not apply to Mac OS X 10.2.X as the Disk Utility does not
have the Restore Tab option.

The bad news is that I just switched to ext3 .... :-(

But I downloaded Carbon Clone Copier (on my PearPc system !) and I am
currently
copying the old drive to the new drive inside PearPC.
I don't know if it will finally work yet, as it is going to take a lot of
time.
