SSID identifer in Configuration data

I had put code in to have device have multiple channel path(s)

I know that a Subsystem which in 3990 technology is a single 3990

what ever the maximum devices it suppourts a 3990 subsystem can have a

maximum of 8 channel path

In Dasdtab.c it seems that this is the field that identifies the SSID

store_hw (buf + 232, SSID(dev));

however when I define a new group of channel path(s) and change this

field meaning I want MVS to recognize that this device is part of a

new subsystem

I get an error message unable to read configuration data on this channel

path meaning it seems to be the same subsystem which already has the

maximum of 8 channel paths

Hercules Usage for Mainframe Application Simulation

Hi All,

I am not an expert on IBM mainframes though I have dabbled in
mainframe
COBOL applications a long while ago.

I am exploring the possibility of using Hercules to simulate a COBOL
mainframe application running at a clients site. The simulation will
be
used by new recruits and existing employees of the client to get
familiar with the mainframe application before 'live' operation.

The application is running on a z9 system under z-os. The database is
IMS.

I have the following questions.

1) Has anyone done in this group done this sort of thing before ?
2) Is it feasible ? e.g. using MVS 3.8 for Hercules
3) Assuming that the client has licenses for the COBOL compiler and
IMS, how do I convert the software to Hercules readable format ?
4) Are any real customers using Hercules for simulation / training or
is Hercules restricted to geeks and developers only ?
5) How does the cost/benefit compare with replicating a smaller
version of the system on an LPAR on the mainframe itself ?

I would be grateful if anyone can shed any light on these matters.

Computer Museum at Paris La Defense

Yesterday I visited the new(ish) Computer Museum at the top of the Grande
Arche de La Defense at Paris. While most of the stuff was of the Commodore
Pet variety, there was one interesting exhibit, an IBM 7040 with 1442 card
reader/punch, 1403 printer (not N1), and a 2311 disk drive. They also have
some ancient IBM hand punches, and the innards of what looks like a 2316 or
3336 disk pack. None of the exhibits are operational, but nevertheless it
is worth a visit if you happen to be in the area.

Please don't do that:

Please upload it instead to where I told you to in my earlier reply:

Thank you.

PRINTING of SEPERATOR in VM causes printer to stop and DRAIN

Hi

I originally referred to this in post about "CODE PAGES" about two
weeks.
But I ASS U med that it was the "C" code that I was putting on the
PIPE that was causing the problem.

So I tried with the Printer SETUP pointing to a file and exactly the
same thing happens when I use SEP.
Which means that at least my code is not at fault.

In the middle of printing the SEP pages there is a CMD reject on the
console,The printer goes into a DRAIN state and the print job remains
in the queue.

Actaully I have determined that it is probably at the very end of the
SEP pages.
Can anybody else recreate this issue.

I am using VM/xxx (:-). Not a Z version.

Trying to submit a card deck crashes Hercules

I am running Turnkey-MVS version 3 (the latest v3 version downloaded
from the Turnkey-MVS site) with the TK3F001 patch, on Windows XP
Professional. When I try to submit a card deck to the reader, e.g.
using the command "devinit 10c c:/mvs38j/test/test1.jcl ascii eof", or
using any equivalent method including HercGUI, Hercules crashes with
an "Oops" message.

I have not modified the Turnkey system in any way except to remove the
console printer from the configuration, and to add the missing
"NOAUTH" to the HTTPPORT parameter.

Hercules is the 3.05 version downloaded from the Hercules site.

Is this a known problem, or should I send someone a dump? I have
searched the net but found no answers.

Cheers
Jonas

Very new guy

I have no mainframe experience. I just downloaded the MVS CD image
that I intend to run on Linux. Is there a publicly available version
of the 390 OS and would I be better off starting there.

My goals are to do IBM assembler programming just for fun. I need to
learn the OS and I need to learn the assembly language for IBM. I'm
fairly experienced with X86 assembly so assembler really doesn't scare me.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Allan
